So today we started off at the Cubs new Ballpark in Mesa. The Rockies were there so I arrived early to check out the complex and see if I could snag some baseballs or get some autographs. While walking from the parking lot to the practice fields which are past the stadium from the parking lot. I took some photos of the outside one display showed the different Cubs logos. Others were of baseball cards of recent players.
This is the clubhouse. It is a free standing building. It is a couple of hundred feet from the stadium.
the practice fields are on the opposite side of this building from the stadium. It is very spread out here and it takes a little walk from the parking for the stadium to get to the practice fields.
I like being on the minor league practice fields because you get really close to what is going on.
The players walk from the clubhouse to the stadium.
After checking out the complex I headed over to get tickets for the game and it was completely sold out. So now to figure out what to do. I figure well this stadium will be here a bunch of years and I will most likely be at spring training again. So I had to figure out a new plan.
So I decided to head to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick and check out the Diamondbacks game they were playing the Indians. So when I headed over to the ticket window there it said there were only lawn tickets left which was fine because that’s what I always get. This whole season has been very busy for the stadiums and they have been having very good crowds. I have not seen this in previous years at any stadium. Especially for day game during the week.
So onto the Indians Vs. the Diamondbacks.
Trevor Cahill was the starting pitcher for the D’backs.
The Indians Michael Bourn lead off the inning with a single followed by a single by Asdrubal Cabrera. Jason Kipnis hit into a double play getting Cabrera out at second and himself out at first. Bourn advanced to third. Michael Brantley flew out to end the inning for the Indians.
Justin Masterson was the starting pitcher for the Indians. He got out of the inning throwing three pitchers, Wow first pitch swing D’backs! He would pitch 4 and 2/3 inning only allowing 2 runners both hit by a pitch.
The Indians would score the first run of the game in the 3rd. Yan Gomes scored on a David Adams sac fly to right field. Which resulted into a double play getting Jeff Francoeur out at first because he did not tag up and that ended the inning.
Masterson pitching to Shelley Duncan in the 3rd inning. He was the second batter hit by Masterson. He would get out trying to steal second during Matt Tuiasosopo at bat.
Lonnie Chisenhall hit a 2 run home run this is the ball going out in right field 3-0 Indians.
Martin Prado gets the Diamondbacks first hit of the game in the 5th inning off the Indians Cody Ryan. The Indians would score 2 in the 5th, Francisco Lindor hit a double to get on base and would score on a Cabrera ground rule double. (5-1) Indians
He would eventually score the D’backs first run on a Tuiasosopo single.
Josh Collmenter pitching for the D’backs in the 8th inning for the D’backs.
I believe this is Chuck Taylor taking a lead at first after walking in the 5th inning.
The Indians would score 2 more runs in the 9th and win the game 7-1. This was a pretty good game with very good pitching by the Indians and 4 no hit inning (except the hit batters!) by Masterson who was announced as the Indians opening day Starter.
So as I was watching this game the Rockies shut out the Cubs 13-0 and hit 4 home runs.
Also if any body is wonder I got 3 baseballs Monday night at the Diamondbacks batting practice on the practice fields, 1 catch, 1 roller and an Easter egg. I had2 of the autographs by Marc Trumbo and Archie Bradley. Bradley is a very high prospect in the Diamondback organization and is rank as the 25th best prospect in all of baseball.
Well that is it for day 2.
Day 3 I will be back at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick for possible 2 games as the Rockies have a split double header. I will definitely be at the day game still pondering the second.
Well See you around.
Cubs vs. Rockies
Game 3 of series.
Ok I think I got this my43rd game at Coors, 52nd with road trip and 55th with Colorado Springs! Just a little baseball!!!!!
This being a Sunday and a bobble head day the day started early the parking even with the free Sunday parking was difficult. Even with getting to Coors around 10:15 AM it was already limited and I had to park a few blocks further than normal. The lines were already starting this early. Todays Bobble head was Troy Tulowitzki’s so that brought out a lot of people to get his bobble head.
I did not care that it was his I just need it to get the whole collection. If I did not need it for the set it is not a must have. Not my favorite player and I think it looks like he is dropping a deuce!!
Instead of throwing out the first pitch he caught the first pitch which confirmed my theory that he is a catcher!!
It being a Sunday it was autograph Sunday the signers today were Jhoulys Chacin, Drew Pomeranz, Josh Rutledge and Josh Outman. I had my Mom get on Drews line and she got him on my 16×20 and I got a card signed by Jhoulys.
Tyler Chatwood was the starting pitcher for the Rockies here he is throwing the first pitch to the Cubs Luis Vilbuena. Chatwood faced 6 Cubs batters in the first inning Valbuena grounded out, he did walk Nate Schierholtz and struck out Junior Lake to end the inning.
Charlie Blackmon started in right field today and batted second for the Rockies. Dexter Fowler started the game striking out, but Blackmon would hit a double and Score on a Carlos Gonzalez single.
The ball Charlie hit to left for his double.
The Next batter after Charlie was Troy Tulowitzki
Swinging a little wildly at a pitch he made contact and grounded out to Cubs short stop Starling Castro.
castro throwing over to first base to get Tulo out.
Anthony Rizzo making the catch at first.
Carlos Gonzalez hit a single and scored on a Michael Cuddyer double for a 2-0 Rockies lead.
Edwin Jackson was the starting pitcher for the Cubs.
Cuddy heading to second for his double.
Nolan Arenado popped out to end the inning.
Here he is watching the ball go up in the air.
Darwin Barney Making the catch just past the infield grass.
After a few innings we decided to get a different vantage point for the game some place the group normally doesn’t watch a game and that is in the 3rd level.
With moving and not too much happening I did not get to many photos this is from Cargo scoring in the 6th inning on a Nolan Arenado inside the park home run wait triple no wait I mean double. OK confused yet I was also! Nolan Arenado hit a ball to Junior Lake in centerfield on the throw in the ball passed the infield and hit of the wall Cargo and Michael Cuddyer scored and the ball rolled into the Rockies dugout.
Michael Cuddyer scoring.
Nolan Rounding third.
Nolan at third while the umps discuss the play.
Now why was he not aloud to go home and how did he end up back on second? Well he had to go back to the base which the Cubs last had control of the ball. Which means he had to go to second because the place he was at the last time the Cubs had control of the ball. That was at second when Lake threw the ball. So he had to go back to second. So basically the rule allows you to throw the ball away if you think there will be a inside the park home run. What really confesses me is that if Arenado had to go back 2 bases how does the 2nd run count. Shouldn’t Cuddy have to go back to third base also. Not that I don’t want the Rockies to get the run but the rule makes no sense and is slightly confusing.
Walt Weiss comes out to talk to the Umps about the call. I think he needs to get a little bit more animated when he goes out to argue calls. The tough guy arm cross is not working I think he has to go out there with a little fire in the eyes!! I think he has to you tube Earl Weaver or Billy Martin!
Nolan returning to second base.
I think if he should of got the cycle just because he got a home run, triple and a double which was ruled a single with advancement on the throw all in one at bat!!!! (Embrace the Sarcasm)!
After Tyler Chatwood pitched 6 innings allowing 2 runs both in the 6th inning Josh Outman came into pitch in the 7th. Antony Rizzo hit a solo home run and Nate Schierholtz scored on a Darwin Barney sac fly to left. Schierholtz got to third an a bad throw to second on a pick off attempt. After facing 3 batters in the inning Outman was taken out and Edgmer Escolona came into the game.
Edgmer pitching in the 7th inning.
James Russell came in to pitch for the Cubs in the 8th. He only pitched to Charlie Blackmon and then the Cubs made another pitching change and put in Matt Guerrier.
With Rafael Betancourt on the DL because of an Appendectomy Rex Brothers came in to pitch in the 9th and got his 5th save of the year.
Junior Lake swing for the final out of the game.
The Rockies went on to win 4-3.
That is it for this series at Coors.
I have the Marlins series coming up. So far They have played 3 in that series.
Well See you at Coors!!!!
Remember sometimes this week I will be announcing the prize for the trivia contest!!
If you want to see the question check out this post from earlier in the week: http://roxaddict.mlblogs.com/2013/07/23/roxivus-whatever-that-means-and-game-one-of-the-cubs-series/
Cubs vs. Rockies
need to figure out how many game I have been to at Coors and in total for the year!
Before the game there was a street fair on Blake street it had a few things for the kids, a Live band playing at the corner of 22st and Blake.
Also on the corner of 21st and Blake Kyle Bannister was doing a chalk art piece on the side-walk. Kyle does a lot of baseball related art you can see more of his work if you search engine his name in almost all search engines.
Here is the creative BNW taken from Coors Field toward 21st. St.
Once again I got directly on-line for autographs first the Line with Andres Galarraga, Mike Lansing and Kevin Ritz. Again I went to the center field line and back to Galarragas again. This time I had him sign a Lefty batting helmet that I bought at the Coors garage sale on Thursday and a Rockies magazine that I found that morning that he was on from 1994. Once again I missed a few innings of the game but I have seen over 50 games I only had 3 to get all the thing I would have liked signed and if they did this for the next month I think I would still have cards and other stuff for him to sign. I think I have maybe 15-20 more cards from the early 90’s and other collectible Rockies stuff he could sign. As for everyone else I pretty much ran out of cards for them to sign.
Juan Nicasio was the starting pitcher for the Rockies this game. It was the 3rd inning when I took this photo the Cubs were up 1-0 and Starling Castro was at the plate. The Cubs run was scored on a home run by Luis Valbuena before this at bat.
The starting pitcher for the Cubs was Carlos Villanueva. He would walk 2 in the 3rd inning and the Rockies did not score off this opportunity.
Troy Tulowitzki hit the ball back to Villanueva with Dexter Fowler on 2nd and Carlos Gonzalez on first, he would hit the ball back to Villanueva who threw to Cubs second base man Darwin Barney who threw over to first for the double play once again a missed opportunity for the Rockies to score.
Castro throwing to first.
Tulo out at first to end the inning.
During the bottom of the 4th. the wind picked up and trash started blowing out of the stands on onto the field.
It all ended up in right field just circling Nate Schieholtz.
There was quite a bit of it!
Carlos Villanueva pitching in the 4th inning.
The Rox would get things going in the 4th inning. Wilin Rosario would hit a double with 1 out and Todd Helton on base, Helton would end up on third.
Nate Schierholtz misplaced Rosario’s hit to right field.
Rosario safe at second base after his double.
Nolan Arenado would ground out to first but Helton would score a run to tie the game at 1.
Juan Nicasio would walk and Dexter Fowler would hit his 3rd triple of the season scoring Rosario and Nicasio. Above Nicasio is crossing the plate. The Rockies would take a 3-1 lead.
Between the 4th and 5th inning the grounds crew and security would run out and pick up all the trash on the field.
the Rockies continued to score runs in the 5th inning. Carlos Gonzalez started it off with his 26th home run of the season to score another run 4-1 Rockies.
Helton hit a single scoring Tulo. 5-1 Rox.
Cubs manager Dale Sveum took Villanueva out of the game. Michael Bowden came into pitch for the Cubs.
Things did not get better for the Cubs the first batter Bowden faced was Rosario who hit a single scoring Michael Cuddyer. (6-1) Rox
Charlie Blackmon came in a pinched hit for Nicasio in the inning and he walked in the inning. The Rockies would get a 4th run in the inning on a Dexter Fowler sac fly to left scoring Helton from third. (7-1) Rox
Starling Castro grounded out to Tulo at short to start the 6th inning for the Rockies. The Cubs would get a run in the 6th. After the Castro out Anthony Rizzo would hit a single and then score on a Alfonso Soriano double (7-2) Rox
Adam Ottavino pitched in the 6th inning for the Rockies and was taken out after allowing a hit in to the Cubs Darwin Barney and then walking Welington Castillo in the 7th Wilin Lopez came in for the Rockies. Barney would score later in the inning on a Luis Valbuena single. (7-3) Rox
D.J. LeMahieu hit a single in the 8th inning and was awarded on an interference by Starling Castro on a pick off play advancing him to second. Tulo hit a double with D.J. and Dex on base to add 2 additional runs on the Rockies total (9-3) Rox
Dexter Fowler not scoring I forgot why he was called back after this play. I think it may have been a foul ball or something. Just left it in because of the action in the photo. As I mentioned before he did score on a Tulo double.
Tulo hitting the 2 run double.
With a comfortable lead the Rockies brought in Mitchell Boggs who we recently got from the Cardinals organization for Parker Frazier who has been in Tulsa. Boggs was recently demoted from the Cardinals to there double A team. So I guess that screams opportunity for Rockies. I hope this pans out for the team.
The first batter he faced Junior Lake grounded out. Darwin Barney then hit a double.
Here he is pitching in the 9th inning.
Darwin Barney’s ball going down the third base line for his double. Boggs did get out of the inning striking out pinch hitter Cody Ransom, walking Valbuena Castro would end the game hitting to Tulo and he would toss to D.J. LeMahieu to get Valbuena out at second the Rockies took this one 9-3 against the Cubs. They defiantly needed this win over the Cubs one just not to lose the series and 2 they should have not lost the night before. This home stand is a very good opportunity for them to get some wins.
So that is it for this one and Roxivus.
Have one more from the Cubs series and they already played 2 against the Marlins as I am writing this. I was there for all 3. Also check back for the announcement of the contest from my last post’s contest. Also somewhere I may post photos of some of the Items I got at Roxivus and autos.
See You at Coors!!!!
