Giants vs. Rockies game 2 of series.
My 21st game of the year.
I got down to Coors after 5P.M. which is rare for me but I headed in and The Giants were taking batting practice and it was their 2nd or 3rd group. So I was just hanging around in the pavilions and I caught my 3rd baseball of the year.
This one is going to be quick.
After Brandin Pill hit a double to start the 2nd inning for the Giants he advanced to third on a Andres Torres fly out to center field. He would score along with 2 other runs in the inning. (4-0) Rockies The Rockies got 1 back in the bottom of the 2nd and they would tie the game at 4.
Wilin Rosario scoring the run in the 2nd.
Dexter Fowler sliding into 3rd after and than would score on a bad throw from Angel Pagan to third. This must of a scary moment for Dex as Sandoval took to the air!
The Giants took a 5-1 lead in the 4th.
Rosario at bat in the 3rd inning. he would strike out in the inning, but could not pass up the shot!
Jordan Pacheco came up in the 5th inning with bases loaded and 2 out. I was like wow this should get us a run or 2 since he hits well under pressure and is good for a single or double which can get the Rockies 2 or 3 runs and would take the lead. Instead he hit a home run to left field scoring Cargo, Rosario and Lemahieu as well as himself to give the Rockies a 9-5 lead. Fowler also scored earlier in the inning.
Pacheco steps on home plate with the 3 base runners standing at home. The Rockies got one more run in the 6th when Cargo hit a solo home run. (10-5) Rox
The Giants did get 3 runs in the 7th and an additional 1 in the 8th. They did fall short of the win by 1 the Rockies took this one 10-9 as the final this was a much needed win for the Rockies and it was great after the disappointing lose the night before.
Rosario points to the sky after Rafael Betancourt struck out the sides in an incredible save for him. This was Gregor Blanco make the final out of the game. This broke a 10 game losing street for the Rockies against the Giants. That’s it for this one still got 2 games against the Giants this weekend.
See You at Coors.

Yankees vs. Rockies
My 18th game of the season.
This was a day game and the last game of the series the Rockies have won 1 and the Yankees have won one.
I got to Coors about 9 A.M. to see if I could have any luck getting any autographs by the players entrance. A few Yankees did stop to sign I only had cards for Hiroki Kuroda so he signed 2 cards for me. It was than time for the gates to open and I headed back to my truck to drop off some stuff and get my umbrella because once again it was threatening to rain. After heading into the stadium I immediately headed to the Yankees side of the field as I was walking over Mariano Rivera came out and started signing, he had an usher get a kid and bring him to the field and he signed for him signing on the warning track. He than began signing and he did another marathon signing for 20 minutes to a half and hour.
This is the ball. It was great getting his auto and was one of the Yankees that were on this trip I really wanted. I also wanted Joe Girardi on my 1993 Rockies team photo but he was elusive this whole series. Kevin, Eric and I were waiting by the Yankees dugout before the game but it started pouring and we gave up on trying to get it.
After a few hours of trying for autographs it was time for the game Jeff Francis was the starting pitcher for the Rockies. The Yankees did score a run in the 1st. Jayson Nix who was the second batter of the inning walked and later score the run on a Vernon Wells 2 out single.
C.C. Sabathia started for the Yankees. He walked Eric Young Jr. to start the game. Dexter Fowler hit to Yankees short stop Jayson Nix and EYJ was out at second and Dex got on base. He scored on a Carlos Gonzalez sac fly to left field, Dex did advance to third on a Troy Tulowitzki hit.
Dex sliding into home.
Yankees catcher Chris Stewart missed the tag and Dex got his hand on the plate before being tagged on the back.
Nolan Arenado fields a ball an throws to second base to get Chris Nelson out at second. Nelly walked to led off the inning.
Nelly sliding into second.
Chris Stewart is safe at first on the hit.
Nolan Arenado taking a big swing sending the ball deep to left center in his 2nd inning at bat.
The ball was caught by center fielder Brett Gardner.
Nelly making a big turn at second after hitting the ball to start off the 4th inning. He did stop at second and did go on to score the second run of the game for the Yankees. (2-1) Yanks
After the Rockies at bats in the 4th the rain got real heavy.
The tarp came out and we headed into a 1 hour and 58 minute rain delay. Two very heavy rain cells came through and for the second time this series they evacuated the rockpile and upper deck.
When the game continued Adam Ottavino came out to pitch for the Rockies. Adam Warren pitched for the Yankees.
Robison Cano can only watch as Ottavino’s slider sails into the bullpen in right field for his 9th home run of the season and a 3-1 Yankees lead. Cano also hit a single in the 3rd inning which was his 1500th career hit.
That awkward moment when a pitcher gets to the mound before the manager gets to the mound to remove the previous pitcher,Boone Logan heading to the mound while Warren still had the ball. The delay was because Girardi was meeting with the Umpires because of a double switch that would put Ichiro in center field. this switch was in the 6th inning.
With the Yankees up 3-1 the Rockies would put Wilton Lopez on the mound amongst the cringe of the Coors Field crowd. This was actually a good outing for Lopez. He started the inning striking out Jayson Nix and got Cano and wells both to ground out to second to get out of the inning only facing the 3 batters. Lopez has been known to get himself in trouble and let up a few runs. He also pitched well in the 9th inning. Facing 4 batters. the only base runner was Lyle Overbay who hit a single. This was one of his best performances I have seen him pitch this year he has had single good inning but to pitch well for 2 is nice to see after a bunch of really bad outing for him.
Eric Young Jr. walked in the Rockies 8th and would get into David Robison’s head! Robinson threw to first a few times.
With the Rockies coming up in the 9th inning the Yankees released the Sandman from the bullpen for the second game in a row.
Mariano Rivera came into pitch to the Rockies he got the first 2 batters out. As much as it sucks to see him come in against your team it is truly amazing to watch this guy pitch. As much as it his great to see him pitch I would have been O.K. only seeing him pitch once this series.
Josh Rutledge would make the last out of the game grounding out to short and getting out at first. The Yankees won this one and did not need a bad call to do it this game. Overall the Rockies pitched well in this series and had a few good offensive moments. This was Rivera’s 621st save in his career. It was cool they way he treated the fanes this whole series and took a lot of time to sign for fans.
Well the Yankees would shake hands at the end of this one and take the series.
This was a rough home stand with the Rockies only winning 2 out of the s 6 games against the Rays and Yankees. After the weekend away series in St. Louis they are 2 and a half games behind the Giants with a 20 and 17 record. I did not see the Sunday game they won, but I heard that Jorge pitched a great game good to see him getting back to the way he use to pitch. Well the Rockies have one more series with the Cubs before returning home next weekend and playing the Giants and then the Diamondbacks.
That’s it for this one. May be heading down to my first game of the year in the Springs.
Yankees vs. Rockies Game 2
My 17th Game at Coors this season.
Today started earlier than normal, I usually head to Coors at about 3 O’clock or so if I am not going early for autographs. Instead I headed down at about 12:30 for the Dexter Fowler Radio Show on 104.3 ESPN Radio. It is pretty cool it is at Jackson’s Lodo across from Coors. Dex basically answers questions and talks about himself and the team, during the hour-long radio show. It is hosted by different host depending on when the show is scheduled during the day. You can listen on the radio, but it is fun to be there. Dex is a really good guy and takes photos and signs autos for fans.
Today since it was early in the day not as many people were there but it was a good crowd. There were 4 of us from group today.
I than headed home for a little while and then headed back to Coors for the early gates that open at 4:30 I got there about 4 and the line for the was pretty long. When we entered the stadium the tarp was on the field and there was no batting practice so we waited in the area where they put up the chains so you can’t access the rest of the stadium and waited for it to open. We than headed down to the wall on the third base side to see if we can have any luck getting any Yankee autographs. Today it was raining for the most part while we were waiting and we all configured our umbrellas so our stuff and we would not get wet for the most part it work, but we did learn Amy did not know how to hold an umbrella still and kept getting us wet, mainly me but I think she did get everyone we were standing with at one point or another! So during warm ups no one came over and including Chris Nelson who we saw the night before an said he would come over to take photos with use in his new uniform. After the game we saw him again and he said he forgot. I did get a few photos over there.
In the photo above he is standing watching the video that the Rockies put together of him.
It was than game time and we headed to our seats an I sat in my usual section. Amy sat out in right above the auxiliary score board in the front row. Kevin sat in his normal section. Mariano later Met up with me in the section I sit in.
The starting pitcher for the Rockies this game was Juan Nicasio. Above he is throwing out the first pitch to Brett Gardiner who hit a single to start the game I guess there goes that chance for a no-hitter early! Two batter later Vernon Wells hit a home run that Scored Gardiner and himself that put a quick end to a chance for a second shutout in a row! Those were the only 2 hits in the inning Nicasio did face the first 5 batter in the Yankees line up.
David Phelps was the starting pitcher for the Yankees did slightly better in the first than Nicasio getting all 3 batters he face to ground out.
In the second inning Nelly made another attempt to get a hit as a Yankee and once again was unsuccessful, this time grounding out to the shortstop Reid Brignac. Yes once again Troy Tulowitzki was not in the line up, I am not sure of the reason to cold, to wet, a sore this or a strained that. Who can keep up or care enough to listen to the reason anymore.
Rockies responded quickly in the first inning Wilin Rosario hit a single with one out and Todd Helton hit his 2nd home run of the season and ties the game at 2.
Here is Helton’s home run going into the crowd above the auxiliary scoreboard.
Ichiro watches as it bounces back onto the field.
Todd high fives Nolan Arenado after running the base’s.
Both starting pitchers pitched well Nicasio pitched five innings and Romaine pitched 6. Beside the 2 runs each of them let up in the first no other runs were scored off them.
Josh Outman came into pitch for the Rockies in the 6th. He pitched the 6th and 7th for the Rockies. Now the next photo is something I have to explain before I post it, it is something that was brought to my attention going through search topics for this blog and it is “Josh Outman Adjusting Cup”. So this was the first time I have seen him pitch since I have seen that topic and well here it is!
“Josh Outman Adjusting Cup” It is very 4-year-old needing to pee. After I noticed and took this shot I realized that he did this before every pitch. One of those thing I wish I never noticed.
He did end up getting it in the 7th inning when he hit it to Dexter Fowler who over ran the ball and Nelly ended up getting to 3rd base. It was a single and an error for the advancement to 3rd. It was nice to see him get his first hit with his new team. Wish him the best of luck and hope all goes well with him with the Yankees. He has been a really cool guy to the fans and always had time to sign, take photo’s or just hang with us for a few minutes after a game.
Nelly stepping on third.
Rex Brothers pitched in the 8th for the Rockies sitting all 3 Yankees batters down in the inning.
The last out of the inning was Robinson Cano striking out.
In the 8th and was hit by a pitch, Eric Young Jr. came into pinch hit for him. so it must be something to do with Tulo’s leg that is why he was not in the starting line up. Young stole second.
Jonny Herrera goes for the deep throw to first.
It was a little of the mark and Vernon Wells got on base. Rafael Betancourt would than walk Lyle Overbay so runners would than be on first and second. Ichiro than sac bunted and advanced the runners wells and Overbay to second and third. He than intentionally walked Jyson Nix to load the base’s to hopefully get a forced out or double play. Travis Hafner pinch hit for Nelly and struck out so the rockies had 2 outs and base’s loaded Brennan Boesch pinch hit for the pitch David Robinson. Boesch hit a ball to Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado who threw it to first and it was called safe which scored the runner Wells from 3rd. According to people who saw the replay and a photo I have seen he was out at first so I am giving that RBI to the umpire who blew the call. So this games final score was the Rockies 2, Yankees 2 and the umps 1.
That was the final score of this game.
Walt Weiss came out to argue the call.
Here is a quote I took from a News paper article from Rockies first baseman Todd Helton.
“Felt like he was out,” Rockies first baseman Todd Helton said. “I don’t know what the replay showed. It was close. Yeah, it’s a tough call. It’s a shame the game had to be decided on a call like that. But got to give them credit for being in that situation in the first place.”
Mariano Rivera came in to pitch for the Yankees in the 9th which pretty much sealed the win for the Yankees. this was his 620 career save. So we got to see Rivera pitch the most saves in MLB history. If that counts for much!
Rosario also made contact but he flew out to Brett Gardner in centerfield to end the game.
Chris Stewart who came in to catch in the 9th shakes hands with Mariano after the save and the Yankees win this broke a 5 game losing streak at Coors for the Yankees going back over 6 years. So that was it for this one the Yankees won 3-2. It stinks that a blown call decided this game but unfortunately the Rockies were in a bad situation that a blown call should have not of decided the outcome.
After the game I got to meet up with Nelly and congratulated him on his first Yankees hit and wished him good luck with his new team. Here he is signing autographs for a few fans.
So that is it for this game. There is one more from this series as I am writing this the Rockies are not doing so well in St. Louis. Friday night they had 1 hit against the Cardinals Shelby Miller in a very impressive pitching performance. The real crazy thing is the only hit was a lead off hit by Eric Young Jr. and then the next 27 batters got out. It is only the 4th time this has happened in almost 40 years.
NY Yankees vs. Colorado Rockies
My 16th game of the Year.
Today I finally got my first Batting Practice baseball’s of the year! Yes, that is plural baseball’s. I caught both during the Rockies batting practice and both were hit by Troy Tulowitzki. The Yankees batting Practice was also pretty good but I did not get any from them but did have a chance on a few. During the Yankees batting practice I noticed that Mariano Rivera was signing on the wall in left field I looked at the crowd and realized I would never make it over and get an autograph so I stayed in the pavilions.
Yes, That is five rows of people pushing, climbing and leaning all to get their stuff signed by the best closer in the history of Major League Baseball. He actually signed 2 different time during batting practice once for 5-10 minutes before he headed out to the field and then for 40 minutes after at the end of batting practice.
After batting practice while Mariano Rivera was still signing I headed to the Rockies side of the field figuring I would never get to the Yankees wall. On the Rockies side Todd did sign and I had him sign my #17 ball that I had David Neid sign when the 1993 guys were here opening weekend. I did this because they are the only 2 # 17’s to play for the Rockies and I am figuring that they will be the only 2 after Helton retires.
Jorge De La Rosa, Yorvit Torrealba and Jim Wright head in from the bullpen.
Here is Jorge taking the mound and writing in the dirt.
Here is his first pitch to the Yankees Ichiro Suzuki. Ichiro lined out to Jonny Herrera at shortstop. Jorge pitched well and the only batter to get on base was Jason Nix who hit a single.
Hiroki Kuroda was the starting pitcher for the Yankees. He also pitched well Josh Rutledge did get a hit but was picked off on first base and Kuroda only faced 3 Rockies batters in the inning.
Chris Nelson who was recently traded to the Yankees made his Coors Field return only after a few game in NY. In the second inning he came to the plate with 2 outs he was hitless since going to the Yankees after this at bat he was still hit less in a twist of irony from the baseball gods he grounded out to his replacement on the Rockies Nolan Arenado.
Arenado throwing to Todd Helton on first base.
Nelson running to first.
Kuroda went a little high on a pitch to Arenado during his 2nd inning at bat. Arenado did end up grounding out to end the inning.
Ichiro at bat in the 3rd inning. He would hit a single with 2 outs.
He would steal 2nd base and then was left on second.
Yorvit Torrealba making contact in the 3rd inning. he did ground out for the first out of the 3rd inning. Jonny Herrera hit a double that looked like may get some get the Rockies a run. De La Rosa did ground out, Dexter Fowler would walk and Josh Rutledge would also ground out to end the inning.
Before the 4th inning an announcement was made to evacuate the upper deck and rockpile.
here is everyone leaving the upper deck
and the empty Rockpile.
They did continue the game without any rain delay. Not much had happened in the next few innings Jorge continued to pitch very well and so did Kuroda. Kuroda struck out 2 of the 3 batters he faced in the 4th. The Yankees Chris Stewart did hit a single in the 5th, but that was the only offence for either team in the inning.
With 2 outs in the 6th inning Josh Rutledge would hit a single to get on base.
Carlos Gonzalez would drop the bomb on Kuroda with this 2 run home run to give the Rockies a 2-0 lead. Michael Cuddyer and Todd Helton would both get on base in the inning after the Cargo home run and were left on base.
Cargo high fives Josh Rutledge after his 6th inning home run.
Matt Belise would come in t pitch for the Rockies in the 7th. Jorge went 6 innings not allowing a run, the Yankees only had 3 hits. Jorge struck out 2 and walked 1. Very good outing for him.
Nelson made contact in the 7th and looked like he may of had his first Yankees hit and well that did not happen he hit into a double play getting Brett Gardner out at second and himself at first. Gardner did come into the game in the 7th for the Yankees.
Josh Rutledge throwing to Herrera who was covering at second.
Who throw to Todd at First.
To complete the double play.
Brett Gardner taking a swing in the 9th to strike out against Rafael Betancourt to end the game for the Rockies win.
Torrealba dropped the ball
Torrealba celebrates the win in his very animated way jumping and flailing as he heads to the mound.
here he is shaking hands with Betancourt after the win. So The Rockies win TTTTHHHHEEEEE RRRRRROOOOOCCCCKKKKKKIIIIIEEEESSSS WWWIIIIIIIIINNNNNN!!!!!!
Had to do it. Well that is it for this one still have 2 more from this series. It did rain through most of this game. I am so over the bad weather for games this year at least it was not snow. The weather did not get any better the rest of the series either.
See You at Coors!
Rays vs. Rox
My 15th game at Coors this year.
Today was another cluster of a day at Coors. With it being autograph Sunday and a bobble head give away day, once again we had to get to the stadium way earlier than we would need on a regular Sunday. What really stinks is this year the game time is at 2:10 which seemed like a good idea, till we relized with the promo’s we still have to get to the gate at the same time as in past years when the games started at 1:10.
Today was Vinny Castilla day.
So the autograph signers today were Jordan Pacheco, Juan Nicasio, Wilton Lopez and Josh Outman. So I already had everyone on my team project except Josh Outman so I got in his line. I was the first one in his line. Now another thing that happens now is that the gates open 2 hours before game time but the autograph session still starts an hour and a half before game time so you than have to wait in line for almost a half hour. By the time that they start signing you really can’t get on a second line for another autograph because of the extra amount of people and the 30 minutes of people getting on-line that makes the lines way to long to get a second auto which is not that bad but in the past most of the time you would be able to get 3 or all 4 players signing. So you really have to pick who you get wisely! Luckily I only need 1 player.
After waiting around for the end of autograph session I than headed down to get a place along the wall to see who else I could get. Todd Helton signed and skipped over the ball i had for him to sign. he seemed to only be signing with a black sharpie and was not taking pens and other color markers that fans had. The ball I had for him to sign was actually a ball I also had David Neid sign because I wanted the 2 #17 that played for the Rockies on the same ball. Since most likely their will only be those two once Todd retires. Some days autograph collecting is like fishing some days you leave with a bucket full and others the big one gets away. Not too worried sure I should have more opportunities to get the ball signed.
So Dinger got all dressed up for Cinco De Mayo and Vinny’s Bobble head day in his Matador outfit.
For the first pitch they had Vinny and his three son’s come out to the field. His 2 son’s Christian and Daulton stood on the mound with him and his older son Marco who you can see snagging baseballs in the outfield during the Rockies Batting Practice caught the ball behind home plate
Jhoulys Chacin made his rehab start today wait this wasn’t a rehab start. Ooops!!
Well it looked like a rehab start. The first inning was really rough inning for him and even more rough to watch. It looked like he was having a tough time with the placement and location of pitches. He gave up a single to Desmond Jennings then walked the next batter Matt Joyce. He did get Evan Longoria to fly out to Michael Cuddyer in right field, but Jennings did move up to third. Jennings did go on a score on a Jame Loney single for a 1-0 Rays lead. Then with Joyce on scored on a passed ball/wild pitch not sure oddly enough I really don’t pay that much attention and the flash the official scorers decision on the board so fast I rarely see it. As Wilin Rosario ran and got the ball Chacin covered home and got the ball and tagged Joyce but the ball came out of his glove. Loney would also score and the Rays would have a 3-0 lead.
Alex Cobb was the starting pitcher for the Rays he started the inning by striking out Dexter Fowler. Nolan Arenado grounded out and Carlos Gonzalez got the Rockies first hit a single, he would than steal second and would be left on base when Troy Tulowitzki struck out to end the inning there is another one of those Tulo outs with a runner in scoring position.
Chacin did settle down a little and only face 3 batters in the inning. The second batter Sean Rodriguez did walk but got out on a double play ball hit by Rays Pitcher Alex Cobb.
Michael Cuddyer started the bottom of the second off with a solo home run to put the Rockies on the board.
The Rays continued to hit Chacin in the 3rd but the fielding got them out of the inning. Jennings who leads off the inning hit a single but was out on a fielder’s choice at second hit by Matt Joyce. Longoria hit into a double play to end the inning.
Tulo would hit the second Rockies solo home run to start off the 4th inning. For the Rockies 2nd run. (3-2) Rays
Did not pick up the camera for that one!
He would also bat in the 5th inning and came up with two runners on base and one out and swung at the first pitch he saw and hit into a double play to end the inning. Once again nice solo shot how about hitting in the clutch a single would have scored two runs but he swung at bad pitches and hitting into double plays is so efficient. Well if you are the other team it is maybe they should start paying half his salary. So there are 2 more RBI’s he did not get! Once again he is a good player not a timely hitter the thing that makes me mad is he can be a great player if he was more reliable with runners on and in clutch situations, it is understandable that he can’t always be the RBI guy and he does get an ok amount of big at bats but could make some real bad at bats great at bats. I think as the “Team Leader” he should be able to accomplish this.
The Rockies got another solo home run in the 7th, here is the ball going out as Desmond Jenning climbs the wall to get it.
Here is Nolan Arenado after taking his third home run stroll around the base’s in his week-long MLB career. This is 7th game and he has hit 3 home runs already. I would say that is a pretty good start.
Things got rough once again for the Rockies in the 6th inning Chacin had a good 5th and fell apart again in the 6th. Walking the leadoff batter Longoria then after striking out Loney the next 3 batters would get on base and 3 runs would score. (6-2) Rays
Chacin would complete the inning.
Josh Outman came into pitch and the Rays added to their total with 2 more runs in the 8th inning.
That would be the final score and the rays would win the game 8-3 and the series taking 2 of the 3 games.
Jamie Wright pitched the 9th inning for the Rays. He struck out all 3 Rockies batters in the inning. He has played for 10 different teams in his 17 year career including the Rockies and The Royals twice. He was drafted by the Rockies out of High School in the 1st round in 1993. He has always been a good guy and last year I did a post about him Called doing the Wright thing when he jumped into the crowd when a kid got hit with a baseball and helped him than gave him his glove. Here is a link to that post. http://roxaddict.mlblogs.com/2012/06/02/doing-the-wright-thing/
Here he is with catcher Jose Lobaton after the last out of the game.
That is it for this game and this series. Next Up 3 against the Yankees.
See You at Coors.
Braves vs. Rockies
3rd game of Series my 12th of the year at Coors.
This game was a lot warmer than the double-header the day before. It was about 50 degrees for most of the game and sunny. It was great to watch a game not wearing 5 layers of clothes for the cold.
Today being a day game that means there was no batting practice, but I did get my second ball of the year a toss-up from Chris Nelson. It was the first 20th Anniversary ball I had gotten.
Tyler Chatwood made his Rockies debut for the year after starting in the year in Colorado Springs. He was called up after Rob Scahill who came up because of Jhoulys Chacin going on the disabled list got optioned back to Colorado Springs.
Tyler Chatwood and Wilin Rosario heading in from the bull pen to start the game.
Chatwood takes the mound for his 2013 Rockies debut. The first batter he faced was the Braves Ramiro Pena It was a shaking looking start after he walked. B.J. Upton hit into a Double play and Justin Upton hit a single, Chatwood got Freddie Freeman to fly out to Carlos Gonzalez in left field.
Tim Hudson was the starting pitcher for the Braves. He face 3 Rockies batters in the 1st. After Eric Young Jr. popped out to Juan Francisco at third. Dexter Fowler would walk and then got into Hudson’s head during Carlos Gonzalez’s at bat Hudson threw over to first a few times during the at bat. Cargo would hit into a double play getting himself out at first and Dex at second.
The Rockies with one out would go back to back with Michael Cuddyer and Josh Rutledge both hit homers to give the Rockies 2 runs.
Josh Rutledge running to first after his home run in the 2nd inning.
The Braves would score 3 runs and the lead in the 4th inning on a series of hits. (3-2)
The Rockies would tie the score at 3 in the 4th inning. Chris Nelson started the inning with a triple and scored 2 batters later on a Tyler Chatwood single.
The Braves once again took the lead in the 6th inning scoring 2 runs Evan Gattis lead the inning with a double and scored. Dan Uggla who scored also reached on a Jonny Herrera error. The Braves took the 5-3 lead.
Adam “Brooklyn” Ottavino took the mound for the Rockies in the 7th. He had another very good inning facing 3 Braves batters and finishing the inning by striking out Justin Upton.
The score remained the same till the Rockies made it get interesting in the 9th inning. Jordan Pacheco started off the inning pinch-hitting in the 7 spot which was the pitchers spot after a double switch in the 8th inning. Pacheco flew out to left. Jonny Herrera would redeem himself for the error in the 6th inning. He would score on a Dexter Fowler double scoring Jonny and Troy Tulowitki who hit a single to get on base as a pinch hitter. That tied up the game at 5.
Rex Brothers pitched the 9th inning for the Rockies holding the Braves scoreless before the Rockies came up to bat in the 9th.
Cole Kimbrel pitched for the Braves in the 9th inning. The Rockies tied up the game against one of the best closers in baseball.
Dexter Fowler running to second on his game tying single.
Tulo scoring the second run from Fowlers double.
Rafael Betancourt pitched the 10th inning for the Rockies.
Cory Gearin pitched the 10th for the Braves.
With a few switches in the previous innings. The Rockies made some switches in the field.
Eric Young Jr. who started the game in right field was moved to 2nd base.
In the most interesting move was putting catcher Yorvit Torrealba at first base. Yorvit pinch hit for the pitches spot in the 10th inning. he did fly out in that at bat but was kept in the game for his offence. He seemed like he could handle playing there well. He did seem a little nerves but he was only involved in one out in the 11th inning which was a ground out.
Eric Young Jr. hit a triple with 1 out in the bottom of the 11th and it looked like the Rockies had the win.
Fowler after hitting the ball to Freeman.
Eric Young Jr. being called out at home after the throw to Gattis.
After the Rockies did not score in the 11th and the Braves did not score in the 12th. The score remained tied at 5.
Wilin Rosario would lead the 12th inning off with a double.
It was a close one but he was called safe. The next batter Michael Cuddyer was intentionally walked. To get to the pitchers spot.
Matt Belise pitched for himself because nobody was left on the bench. He did make a few bunt attempts before striking out for the first out of the inning. Now Yorvit Torrealba who remained in the game at first base for his offense, paid off…..
He hit a single to left field and Rosario ran from second to home.
The ball was coming in as he started his slide.
Gattis did not tag him and he was safe at home and the Rockies would get the 6th and winning run. So the Gamble at first base paid off for the Rockies Torvit hit the game winning single in the bottom of the 12th for the Rockies. The cool thing was that his catching partner was the winning run. Here he is after Wilin scored and he made the turn for second.
the dugouts than emptied and the team celebrated this dramatic come from behind win. It is so awesome to see the drive and motivation to win this team has and then it seems like you never know who will hit the winning run or come through when needed. Reminds me of the 2007 and 2009 playoff years, not saying that is where this is going but sure would like to see it be a possibility. It is stile early in the season but it is just great to see great baseball being played by the Rockies at Coors.
Here he is high fiving Todd Helton.
Yorvit and Walt Weiss both with awesomely huge smiles. Great move keeping Yorvit in the Game Walt. If he had gave up an error at first that lost the game it would of been a bad decision, but since he hit the walk of single score the winning run it was genius!!!!
The Rockies Played 4 in Arizona since this game was played I just have been busy and can’t get these done as quick these days. But they lost 3 of 4 against the D’backs and are currently tied for first in the National League west with them at 15 and 10. The are starting a 3 game series in L.A. against the Dodgers. The Rockies also designated Chris Nelson for assignment during this week on the road which is kinda sad he was really cool to the fans and was always joking around with us and was just a fun guy to have around. Wish the best for him hope he gets picked up by a good team if he doesn’t stay in the Rockies organization. In his place the Rockies have brought up Nolan Arenado to play third base. In his first game in AZ he went 0-3 with a walk, but I know he is a lot better with a lot of power I have seen him play in Tulsa and the 2 years he has been in big league camp at spring training. This year in Colorado Springs he batted .364 with 3 home runs and 21 RBI’s.
Well That is it for this one the Rockies return home against the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend and than take on the Yankees next week. I should be there for all 6.
So See You at Coors!
Atlanta Braves vs. Colorado Rockies
my 10th and 11th game of the season it was a split double-header.
After snow and cold temps it was time for colder temps and baseball.
This was the coldest double-header in MLB History and the first game was the Coldest first pitch in MLB history.
Yes, that is the temp right after Jeff Francis’ first pitch to Andrelton Simmons.
So for game one Jeff Francis was the starting pitcher for the Rockies this was by far not his best game. His first inning wasn’t bad beside the Juston Upton solo home run. He only faced 4 batters getting the Braves lead off batter Andrelton Simmons to pop out to Wilin Rosario and B.J. Upton to ground out to Chris Nelson at third base. Freddie Freeman flew out to Michael Cuddyer in right field. He got out of the inning with 19 pitches a little high for an inning but not horrible.
Mike Minor was the starting pitcher for the Braves got all 3 Rockies he faced out in this inning. He got out of the inning throwing 8 pitches now that is really good.
In the 2nd inning he did walk lead off batter Troy Tulowitzki. He scored from third on a Wil Rosario single. He moved to third on a Michael Cuddyer double.
Michael Cuddyer running to second as Tulo runs to third.
Cuddy dives into second.
Wilin Rosario hitting his single to score Tulo from third base.
Tulo scoring the tying run (1-1)
Jordan Pacheco than hit a single to score Cuddy and for a brief moment they lead the Braves (2-1) Rox
The Braves would score 2 in the 2nd inning on a Dan Uggla home run.
Dexter Fowler tried to get things going in the 3rd inning. with a lead off triple. Josh Rutledge scored Dex to once again tie the game at 3. Cargo struck out and Tulo flew out to shallow center and Rutledge did not score there is another lost RBI and opportunity for Tulo. That is approx. 10 runs that were not scored with runner in scoring position during his at bats.
Tulo swinging at the pitch that he hit to center for the out.
Rosario grounds out to Braves third baseman Chris Johnson who through to Freddie Freeman at first to end the inning.
Rob Scahill came into pitch in the 5th inning for the Rockies. He pitched really well he got out of the inning throwing only 5 pitches in the inning. That was to the middle of the Braves line up starting with Justin Upton then getting Freddie Freeman and Chris Johnson out. Scahill pitched 3 inning throwing a total of 29 pitches now that is really good pitching. He faced a total of 10 batters striking out 2 and only allowing 1 hit a single to Freeman.
Before leaving the game Francis did let up a 4th run a home run to Evan Gattis. (4-3) Rockies.
Not much happened at the rest of the game it was cold it warmed up to about 28 degrees by the end of the game.
With a 4-3 lead the Braves brought out there very affective and intense closer Cole Kimbrell. He started the inning by striking out Michael Cuddyer, Rosario hit a single, Jordan Pacheco also struck out and while Chris Nelson was batting Rosario was thrown out in a very questionable play. He was stealing second base. The question is was it a not so well executed hit and run or was it a steel attempt. This was the third out of the inning and ended the game. The Rockies lost this one and the Braves now have the best record in baseball. So it was time to empty the stadium. We had about an hour and a half to wait for the opening of the gates for the second game of this split double-header. The first game I was the only one of the our regular group to be at the game. Carlos was there for an inning or 2 and Robert was in his post in the pavilions. In total there were only about 1000 fans at this game.
The start of this game was 30 degrees.
Slightly warmer from game one but not much better.
John Garland was the starting pitcher for the Rockies.
Julio Teheran started for the Braves.
Gonna keep this short and sweet it was cold, I did not take many photos the Rockies lost this one also. The Rockies took a 1 run lead in the 3rd the Braves answered with 3 in the 4th.
Here is Eric Young Jr. scoring that run in the 3rd.
John Garlnd got roughed up he did pitch 6 innings. Let up the 3 in the 4th 2 in the 5th and 1 in the 6th.
Josh Outman came in to pitch the 7th. He recently got called back up from The Springs! He was killing it in the Springs pitching in 5 games 10.2 innings with a 0.84ERA. He pitched 2 very good inning this game also striking out 3 and only pitching to 6 batters.
The Rockies went into the bottom of the 9th down 10-1. the Braves scored 4 in the top half of the inning . Josh Outman allowed got touched up in the 9th inning allowing 4 runs. Some of those were after Wilton Lopez came in to pitch, but were runners that Outman had put on base. Wilton did not get as shelled as in Sundays game but something does need to be done with his inconsistency.
The Rockies made an effort to get back into the game but were only able to get 1 run in the inning. they had a mini 2 out Rally but it was way to little to late. This was there 3rd straight home loss after starting the season with 8 consecutive wins to start the season. The final in this one was 10-2. The temp at the end of this game was 27 degrees. It was not to bad till about the 7th inning and then I got to the point of I can’t handle the cold. Despite the loss and the cold it was a fun night hangin with the crew at Coors.
Well that is it for these two games got another one to post about from the exciting Thursday day game.
This Post was brought to you by Jackson of Lodo without getting warm and eating there between games I would have never made it through the second game!!!!!
