Braves vs. Rockies

3rd game of Series  my 12th of the year at Coors.

IMG_8412

This game was a lot warmer than the double-header the day before. It was about 50 degrees for most of the game and sunny. It was great to watch a game not wearing 5 layers of clothes for the cold.

Today being a day game that means there was no batting practice, but I did get my second ball of the year a toss-up from Chris Nelson. It was the first 20th Anniversary ball I had gotten.

Tyler Chatwood made his Rockies debut for the year after starting in the year in Colorado Springs. He was called up after Rob Scahill who came up because of Jhoulys Chacin going on the disabled list got optioned back to Colorado Springs.

Tyler Chatwood and Wilin Rosario heading in from the bull pen to start the game.

IMG_8485

Chatwood takes the mound for his 2013 Rockies debut. The first batter he faced was the Braves Ramiro Pena It was a shaking looking start after he walked. B.J. Upton hit into a Double play and Justin Upton hit a single, Chatwood got Freddie Freeman to fly out to Carlos Gonzalez in left field.

IMG_8493

Tim Hudson was the starting pitcher for the Braves. He face 3 Rockies batters in the 1st. After Eric Young Jr. popped out to Juan Francisco at third. Dexter Fowler would walk and then got into Hudson’s head during Carlos Gonzalez’s at bat Hudson threw over to first a few times during the at bat. Cargo would hit into a double play getting himself out at first and Dex at second.

IMG_8500

The Rockies with one out would go back to back with  Michael Cuddyer and Josh Rutledge both hit homers to give the Rockies 2 runs.

IMG_8503

Josh Rutledge running to first after his home run in the 2nd inning.

The Braves would score 3 runs and the lead in the 4th inning on a series of hits. (3-2)

IMG_8523

The Rockies would tie the score at 3 in the 4th inning. Chris Nelson started the inning with a triple and scored 2 batters later on a Tyler Chatwood single.

The Braves once again took the lead in the 6th inning scoring 2 runs Evan Gattis lead the inning with a double and scored. Dan Uggla who scored also reached on a Jonny Herrera error. The Braves took the 5-3 lead.

IMG_8526

Adam “Brooklyn” Ottavino took the mound for the Rockies in the 7th. He had another very good inning facing 3 Braves batters and finishing the inning by striking out Justin Upton.

IMG_8541

The score remained the same till the Rockies made it get interesting in the 9th inning. Jordan Pacheco started off the inning pinch-hitting in the 7 spot which was the pitchers spot after a double switch in the 8th inning. Pacheco flew out to left. Jonny Herrera would redeem himself for the error in the 6th inning. He would score on a Dexter Fowler double scoring Jonny and Troy Tulowitki who hit a single to get on base as a pinch hitter. That tied up the game at 5.

IMG_8579

Rex Brothers pitched the 9th inning for the Rockies holding the Braves scoreless before the Rockies came up to bat in the 9th.

IMG_8583

Cole Kimbrel pitched for the Braves in the 9th inning. The Rockies tied up the game against one of the best closers in baseball.

IMG_8597

Dexter Fowler running to second on his game tying single.

IMG_8598

Tulo scoring the second run from Fowlers double.

IMG_8611

Rafael Betancourt pitched the 10th inning for the Rockies.

IMG_8629

Cory Gearin pitched the 10th for the Braves.

With a few switches in the previous innings. The Rockies made some switches in the field.

IMG_8637

Eric Young Jr. who started the game in right field was moved to 2nd base.

IMG_8639

In the most interesting move was putting catcher Yorvit Torrealba at first base. Yorvit pinch hit for the pitches spot in the 10th inning. he did fly out in that at bat but was kept in the game for his offence. He seemed like he could handle playing there well. He did seem a little nerves but he was only involved in one out in the 11th inning which was a ground out.

Eric Young Jr. hit a triple with 1 out in the bottom of the 11th and it looked like the Rockies had the win.

IMG_8654

he ran home on a Fowler hit to first and Freeman threw to catcher Gattis.IMG_8664

Fowler after hitting the ball to Freeman.

IMG_8669

Eric Young Jr. being called out at home after the throw to Gattis.

After the Rockies did not score in the 11th and the Braves did not score in the 12th. The score remained tied at 5.

IMG_8683

Wilin Rosario would lead the 12th inning off with a double.

IMG_8688

It was a close one but he was called safe. The next batter Michael Cuddyer was intentionally walked. To get to the pitchers spot.

IMG_8696

Matt Belise pitched for himself because nobody was left on the bench. He did make a few bunt attempts before striking out for the first out of the inning. Now Yorvit Torrealba who remained in the game at first base for his offense, paid off…..

IMG_8706

He hit a single to left field and Rosario ran from second to home.

IMG_8709

The ball was coming in as he started his slide.

IMG_8714

Gattis did not tag him and he was safe at home and the Rockies would get the 6th and winning run. So the Gamble at first base paid off for the Rockies Torvit hit the game winning single in the bottom of the 12th for the Rockies. The cool thing was that his catching partner was the winning run. IMG_8718Here he is after Wilin scored and he made the turn for second.

IMG_8728

the dugouts than emptied and the team celebrated this dramatic come from behind win. It is so awesome to see the drive and motivation to win this team has and then it seems like you never know who will hit the winning run or come through when needed. Reminds me of the 2007 and 2009 playoff years, not saying that is where this is going but sure would like to see it be a possibility. It is stile early in the season but it is just great to see great baseball being played by the Rockies at Coors.

IMG_8734

Here he is high fiving Todd Helton.

IMG_8736

Yorvit and Walt Weiss both with awesomely huge smiles. Great move keeping Yorvit in the Game Walt. If he had gave up an error at first that lost the game it would of been a bad decision, but since he hit the walk of single score the winning run it was genius!!!!

The Rockies Played 4 in Arizona since this game was played I just have been busy and can’t get these done as quick these days. But they lost 3 of 4 against the D’backs and are currently tied for first in the National League west with them at 15 and 10. The are starting a 3 game series in L.A. against the Dodgers. The Rockies also designated Chris Nelson for assignment during this week on the road which is kinda sad he was really cool to the fans and was always joking around with us and was just a fun guy to have around. Wish the best for him hope he gets picked up by a good team if he doesn’t stay in the Rockies organization. In his place the Rockies have brought up Nolan Arenado to play third base. In his first game in AZ he went 0-3 with a walk, but I know he is a lot better with a lot of power I have seen him play in Tulsa and the 2 years he has been in big league camp at spring training. This year in Colorado Springs he batted .364 with 3 home runs and 21 RBI’s.

Well That is it for this one the Rockies return home against the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend and than take on the Yankees next week. I should be there for all 6.

So See You at Coors!

Arizona Diamondbacks Vs. Atlanta Braves

Turner Field, Atlanta Georgia

My 36th MLB game of the year.  42nd including Minors.

After leaving New Orleans at about 9 A.M., We were on our way to Atlanta for a 7P.M. game it is about an 8 hour drive and we lost an hour with the time zone change. We arrived at the stadium about 5P.M. Eastern time.

Lets just start this out with Wow, really like this place from the get go the staff was really nice. The screen was in center field was huge. The stadium also showed a lot about the history of the team which is the longest continues franchise in baseball.

Here was my first look at The inside of Turner Field.

A look at the outfield.

They had these signs with the different years that they won title either Division, League and their 1995 World Series win.

I found these signs interesting I am not sure what the significance or purpose of them are but they have them all over the center field area with different distances.

So we headed to left field for BP the Diamondbacks were hitting an it was not to productive. We did not get anything.

A look from behind home plate while the grounds crew prepared the field.

Before the game they have a competition, Three people had to see who could hit a golf ball closer to the pin they set up in center.

Here is the guy running with the measuring wheel.

Craig Kimbrel hit one and was closer than the contestants.

Exchanging of the line ups and going over the ground rules with the umps.

Here is a look at Turner Field from our seats in section 207. 1st Row. These were cool seats with a great line of sight to the field.

Tim Hudson throwing the first pitch to the Diamondbacks Willie Bloomquist, who grounded out. Aaron Hill and Justin Upton both hit singles before Justin Kubel and Paul Goldschmidt struck out.

Justin Upton watching the ball as it lands for a single.

Chipper Jones at third. It was great to see him play at home in his final season. It is amazing how people are coming from all over to see him play one last time. Most with signs saying where they came from and how long they have watched him play. Teenagers that don’t know what a Braves roster looks like with out the name Chipper Jones on it.

Daniel Hudson throwing to the Braves Michael Bourn, Bourn wasted no time putting a run on the board as he hit a lead off home run. (1-0) Braves. Jason Heyward than hit a single but was left on base as the next 3 batters went down in order.  Including 2 strike outs. Nelson Prado and Dan Uggla.

Bourn taking the home run swing.

Jason Heyward dive back to first.

Dan Uggla strikes out for the 3rd out of the first inning.

Chipper Jones throws over to fist for the first out of the 2nd inning. Miguel Montaro lead off the 2nd with a single. Roberts hit to Jones for this out. The Braves would get the D’backs out of the first with no runs.  Daniel Hudson get into double trouble in the third 3 consecutive Braves hit double in 2nd inning. They sent 9 to the plate and scored 4 runs(5-1) Braves.

Freddie Freeman hits the second double of the inning. Scoring Jones who hit the first double, Andrelton Simmons hit the 3rd which scored Freeman.

Simmons called safe at second.

The Diamondbacks Manager Kirk Gibson and training staff head to the mound. Daniel Hudson was taken out of the game and is reported to have torn a ligament in his elbow.

The Braves Mascot show his elbow is doing well as he does the Chop!!

Jason Kubel runs the base’s after he hit his home run for the D’backs first run of the game in the 3rd inning. (5-1) Braves

After hitting a single Jones tried for 3rd on a Freeman hit to left.

In the 5th inning it was time to take to the stadium and check out the stadium and view the game from different locations around the stadium.

Hudson pitches to Josh Collmenter who came in for Daniel Hudson.

The Diamond backs turn a double play in the 5th inning.

Getting Freeman out at second and Simmons at first.

So it was time for Home Depot items race. Not to creepy actually kinda funny! The ruuners were a Bucket, Paint brus, power drill and hammer.

after causing a pile up of the other runners the bucket won the race!

The Atlanta Skyline from Turner field.

The View from the away bullpen located down the left field line.

When we arrived at the stadium I saw this giant drum in center field. While wandering I noticed a person playing it. It was pretty cool and loud. It was about 10 plus feet high.

A look at Turner Field from center field.

A look from left field.

A look at the field from right field during a Miguel Montaro at bat.

This is a wall dedicated to Atlanta Fulton County stadium which was located across the street from Turner Field.

The Braves fan doing the Tomahawk Chop. Ok so when 4 drunk idiots are doing it at Coors it is annoying but when you get a stadium of Braves fans doing it is kinda cool or at least interesting!

Here is a giant piece of art depicting the history of the Braves.

Tim Hudson pitching to Aaron Hill in the 8th inning.

Aaron Hill dive into first for a single in the 9th inning.

Atlanta had Anthony Vavaro pitch in the 9th inning it was his 4th appearance with them.

The Braves Simmons turns a double play getting Goldschmidt out at second and Ryan Roberts at first to end the game. With a Braves 8-1 win over the Diamondbacks.

That is it for the first one from Atlanta there is 1 more in Atlanta before I head north to North Carolina for a few minor league games.

This is a really cool stadium with a lot of history, tradition and passionate fans.
