Red Sox vs. Rockies
Game 2 of series
My 72nd and final game of the year, 82nd with road trip and 85 the Springs.
Tonight besides being the final home game of the year, It was Todd Helton’s final home game of his career. So most of this post will be a tribute to Todd and his 17 year career.
Dinger got into the act and had a goatee just like Todd’s
This is the last time we will see Todd’s Name in the introductions.
Todd and one of his daughters during the National Anthem
One of Todd’s first tips of the hats of the night before the pre-game ceremony.
Todd’s oldest daughter threw out the first pitch to her Dad!
The Rockies presented Todd with a horse for his retirement. The Horse named A “Tru Bustamove,”
Brad Hawpe and Aaron Cook were both at Coors for Todd’s final game Todd is hugging Hawpe in this photo and Aaron Cook is standing with his back to the camera in the green plaid.
Another tip of the cap after the pre-game ceremony and he headed back to the dugout.
He than brought out the score cards to the umpires. He is shaking hands with Joe West in the photo.
For the last time as an active player Todd takes the field at first base.
Jhoulys Chacin was the starting pitcher this game her he is pitching in the first inning. Here he is throwing to Jacoby Ellsbury, he would lead-off with a single.
Troy Tulowitzki with a try to turn a double play on a hit by Dustin Pedroia getting Shane Victorino out at second.
David Ortiz hit a 2 run double to score Ellsbury and Pedroia for a 2 to 0 Red Sox Lead.
After the Red Sox scored a 3rd run the last out of the inning was a hit back to Chacin to get Bill Middlebrook out at first.
John Lackey was the starting pitcher for the Red Sox. He put the Rockies down in order in the first.
With 1 out in the second Todd Helton came to the Plate once again with a tip of the cap.
on the third pitch of the at bat….
….he hit one more over the auxiliary in right for his 369th and last home run of his career.
He was only able to watch as the ball sailed out into the crowd. Over the years I don’t know how many times I have seen him hit a home run or how many photos of may have taken, But all of them were watched in amazement how easy he made it look to hit a home run in a big league park.
Taking the turn at second after his home run.
With 2 outs in the inning and Corey Dickerson on base hit a double scoring the Rockies second run of the inning. (3-2) Sox
The Red Sox would score a run in the 3rd to take a 4-2 lead. Todd watches as Michael Cuddyer batting in the 3rd inning. Cuddy would strike out in the inning, Todd would come up for his second at bat of the night.
Todd would hit a fly ball to deep left-center.
That was caught by Daniel Nava for the second out of the inning.
Charlie Blackmon would score to tie the game at 4. That was Todd’s 1405 RBI of his career.
Before the 4th inning I headed up to the upper deck because I wanted to get photos of the field with the tributes to Todd.
The game did go on while I was up there and here is Chacin throwing a pitch with a runner on second.
From up here you were able to see the Giant 17 cut into the field and the purple ones painted on the base lines.
Shane Victorino hit a 3 run home run in the 4th to give the Red Sox a 7-4 lead.
On my way down I took the stairs that bring you to the home plate entrance and got a photo of the starting line up photos.
With Michael Cuddyer on base Todd hit a double in the 5th inning. His 589th of his career he is 17th on the all time doubles list. A very appropriate spot to end his career. Cuddy also scored and was Todd’s 3rd RBI of the night and 1406 of his career.
Todd standing at second while Lackey pitches to Nolan Arenado.
Matt Belilse pitched the 7th inning for the Rockies he was the 4th Rockies pitcher of the night. Chacin Pitched only 4 innings giving up 7 runs on 9 hits, walking 2 striking out 3. Rob Scahill pitched the 5th and Drew Pomeranz the 6th.
Ex-Rockie Franklin Morales pitched for the Red Sox in the last 2 outs of the 7th inning.
In the inning Todd took his last at bat at Coors. He did strike out but hey it is baseball and he is a lifetime .316 hitter and he already had a home run and a double in this game, what else could you ask for than a .500 night for your last home game. I don’t know about you but I think I will remember seeing his last home run and his last double especially with that huge slide into second!
Roy Oswalt pitched the 8th for the Rockies, Just like the rest of the Roy Oswalt experiments have gone he was a disaster giving up 5 runs, 4 hits and 1 walk in the inning. Hope this is the last time he will be on this field as a Rockie, Hey Roy thanks for the Misery!!! Just a bit bitter he is the only Rockies to play this year that did not sign my team project this year and his 8.90 ERA helped the team in absolutely no way.
As the Rockies took the field in the 9th inning and it was the last time Todd would take first base at Coors his Daughters came out to the field.
They removed first base which was being changed each inning. These bases did have a special 17 Jewel on the side of them.
Another tip of the cap before the start of his last inning.
Rex Brother pitched for the mound. As you may have noticed in the last few photo is I got a little help from my friends to watch the last inning from behind the dugout.
it was amazing to watch Todd just taking in the experience as he was playing his last inning. Between almost every pitcher he would just look around and take in the crowd and the experience of being on a MLB field.
The Rockies try to get Todd one last out at 1st before he leaves, but John McDonald was safe But Quintin Berry was the second out at second. The inning ended with Brandon Snyder striking out.
Ryan Dempster pitched the 9th inning for the Red Sox. Ryan Wheeler lead the inning with a single, then Charlie Blackmon hit into a double play.
Josh Rutledge ended the game and the Rockies season at Coors by flying out to left field.
The Red Sox as they did 3 times this year celebrated a win against the Rockies 2 times in Fenway and 1 here.
After the game it was time for one last farewell to Todd Helton. It started with him followed by the team walking around the field and giving high-fives to the fans.
Here is most of the team when they were in left field.
Think Diane and the group in center field said it best with there last sign!
After walking around the field Todd stood at home as his teammates and a few Red Sox passed him giving him hugs and shaking his hand.
He than did interviews with roots sports Drew Goodman and MLB networks and former Rockies side line reporter Alana Rizzo.
Immediately after the players left the field the Coors MLB authenticator and Aaron who handles all the game used items at Coors label and tag the buckets of dirt taken from the first base area.
This was a very emotional night at a game. At times I think there was a not a single dry eye in the house and if you did not get emotional
on this night you should have not been there.
So that is it for the 2013 season. I would like to thank everyone who makes these game so great Win or Lose the friends who I sit with others who came to games with me, the ushers and staff that make Coors really feel like my home away from home for the 6 months of the year. To my family and friends that make this all possible. Most of all the reader of this blog who keep me doing this game after game day after day and mile after mile when I am on a road trip with out you I would have not made the top 50 in MLBlogs for most of the season and being 29th for the month of August.
Thanks to Todd Helton for giving his all every time he stepped on the field. For 17 Years of baseball. Just wish I was here for more of them.
For the last time this years that is it for this one
Thanks and see you around.
Cardinals vs. Rockies
My 66th game at Coors this season 76th with road trip 79th with the Springs.
This was a day game so no BP. Did get to the stadium early for some graphs got a few Cardinals on a photo I have of Busch stadium. I ended up with 8 autographs on the photo. I did make some progress before the game I got Colin McHugh on my team 16×20 leaving only Roy Oswalt that I need on it. I now have 51 players and coaches autographs on it. There was no batting practice today.
So this game was a marathon and I have a lot of photos from this game.
Todd Helton was the first out on the field, as the Rockies took the field.
Roy Oswalt was the starting pitcher for Rockies after walking Matt Carpenter. Jon Jay flew out to center field and Matt Holliday did also. With Carlos Beltran batting Oswalt threw over to Todd Helton at first who fake the throw back to Oswalt and tagged Carpenter it was a great play and funny to watch especial that it was done to another first baseman!
A closer view of Oswalt pitching in the first.
Matt Holiday making contact during his first inning at bat.
Michael Wacha was the starting pitcher for the Cardinals. After Charlie Blackmon hit a single, Wacha struck out the next three batters to end the 1st. inning.
Charlie Blackmon getting ready to dive back to first.
Corey Dickerson take a pitch high for a ball. He was one of the batters that struck out in the first. Amazingly enough that the home plate umpire got it right.
Yorvit Torrealba was behind the plate for this game.
Here is Yadier Molina questioning a strike call during his 2nd inning at bat.
Tony Cruz would end the inning with a pop out to Todd Helton.
Todd Helton would lead off the 2nd inning with a double his 589th of his career and 18th of the season.
Yorvit Torrealba questions a strike call by the home plate umpire. See a trend here this guy did not have a consistent strike zone and a pitch that was a strike one time was a ball another. This did happen a lot throughout the game.
Todd Helton scored on a Torrealba single. to put the Rockies on the board 1-0.
Helton high fives Jonny Herrera after he scored. Charlie Culberson would also score to give the Rockies a 2-0 lead.
3 runs to tie the game in the inning.
Carlos Beltran hit a single that scored Jon Jay. (4-1) Rockies
Molina hit a single to score Holliday (4-2) Rockies
Matt Holiday would hit a single to tie the game in the 5th inning scoring Jon Jay from second, which he stole after getting on base with single.
Matt Holliday fist bumps first base coach Chris Maloney.
Taking a lead at first.
Charlie Blackmon hits a double in the 8th inning.
Corey Dickerson hits a triple scoring Blackmon and tying the game at 5.
After the Cardinals scored a 6th run in the ninth…..
…Todd Helton hit a solo home run to tie the game at 6.
Yorvit Torrealba give him a big hug after crossing the plate.
Jonny Herrera hit a double with 2 outs in the 9th. Ryan Wheeler grounded out to the pitcher Edward Mujica to end the inning and we headed for some free Baseball.
Bothe teams went down in order in the 10th. Matt Belisle pitched the 10th for the Rockies and Edward Mujica continued to pitch for the Cardinals in the inning.
Todd was going for the fences in the in the 11th with a few hard swings that almost took his helmet off. This was the second swing that this happened to his helmet.
Charlie Culberson hit a single in the inning.
After a very questionable out in the 12th Walt Weiss came out to argue a call. Jonny Herrera hit the ball and then kicked it the ump said it was in play and Jonny argues that it was in foul territory.
D.J LeMahieu hit a lead off single in the bottom of the 13th inning. Tulo was walked in the inning and they were both left on base.
The first out of the inning was a bunt attempt by Corey Dickerson which he popped out to Daniel Descalso.
The Cardinals once again did not score in the 15th D.J. LeMahieu would once again get on base by hitting a single and Corey Dickerson who should have swung in the 13th and popped out on a bunt. Got to swing this time and he made it count!
D.J. LeMahieu makes the turn at third and heading to home.
As he started his slide into home the ball went passed Yadier Molina.
The tag with ball rolling away.
He over slide home and Fernando Salas picks up the ball.
He dove back…..
…and was safe and the Rockies won 7-6.
The Dugout emptied quickly!!!
Corey Dickerson ended up on third base for a walk off triple. His first walk off of his MLB career I am sure that it will not be his last. I have seen him also walk of in Ashville in 2011. He seems to handle the presser situation well and has been hitting timely and well since his call up.
The team celebrates in the infield and the swarm Corey.
Jordan Pacheco got knocked over as Carey escapes from the crowd.
He than high-five Tulo
and the crowd caught up with him!
It was great to see such an exciting game and they made it worth staying for the 15 inning!! It was nice to see some very good pitching from the bullpen in these late innings to keep them in the game and that they were able to put together a few good offensive innings to get back in this game. It was a great day at Coors had a lot of fun this game. With this win the Rockies and Cardinals split the 4 game series.
The Rockies used 10 pitchers in this game Oswalt pitched 4 and 2/3rd. The Bullpen combined for 10 and 1/3rd innings. The Cardinals Wacha also only pitched to the 5th and they used 10 pitches. The Rockies used 14 different players at the plate and the Cardinals used 15. Another notable thing was Charlie Blackmon going 4 for 8 this game. LeMahieu, Culberson and Herrera all went 3 for 7. The Rockies had 21 hits on their 7 runs.
So that is it for this one.
I was also at Coors for the weekend series against the Diamonbacks and will be at the final 2 home games of the season against the Boston Red Sox.
Giants vs. Rockies
Game 2 of Series
After a beer at Jackson with the incognito Rockpile Ranter it was time to head in and see how batting practice would pan out. It was another day of almost immediately baseballs heading out into the pavilion. one landed a section in front of me as I was heading in and someone else just edged me out of picking it up. After putting down my bag I did get one pretty soon afterwards. It was a bouncer that I was able to pick up in the first row. With the Rockies still batting I got a second bouncer. After I got that one I said to someone:” that I have been getting baseball but have not caught one in a while”. Within about 2 minutes I got my 3rd ball of the day a catch! It was my first catch in over a month. The Rockies then ended their batting practice and the Giants started, with a small crowd and knowing how the first Giants group did the day before I thought I was going to have a record day. I have gotten 4 baseball once before and was looking to tie that or break it. Unfortunately this day it was not going to happen beside a few close calls I did not get any more baseballs.
Chad Bettis was the starting pitcher for the Rockies this was his 6th start at the major league level. He came into this game with 0-2 record. Before coming up he was 3-4 in Tulsa this year. This game he started with 2 quick outs getting both Gregor Blanco and Marco Scutaro to ground out. Brandon Belt was then got on base with a single and then the runs started coming in first Hunter Pence hit one of the longest home runs I have seen hit at Coors for 2 runs. Pablo Sandoval continued scoring with a solo home run to give the Giants a 3-0 lead.
Yusmeiro Petit was the starter for the Giants This was his second start for them. As others have said it was a strong start he allowed 1 base runner in the first 2 innings. D.J. LeMahieu in the first but Troy Tulowitzki hit into a double ply to end the inning. He did also get Corey Dickerson to strike out in the first and Wilin Rosario to end the second inning.
Todd Helton hitting a ball in the 2nd inning trying to get 1 hit closer to the 2500 career hits. This one was actually a fly out to Hunter Pence in right field. I have been trying to photo graph all of Todd’s at bats this week so I can get his 2500 hit I just hope if I do get it looks like the above photo with the ball still in frame! He is just 3 hits away.
The Rockies did get some hits and a run off of Petit in the 3rd inning. Nolan Arenado started it off with a single and scored on a Charlie Blackmon double. (3-1) Giants
Tulowitzki started the 4th inning off by hitting a single and after scoring it brought the Rockies with in 1 of the Giants (3-2)
the Giants added a run in the 6th Brandon Belt scored on a Hector Sanchez single (4-2) Giants
Helton trying to once again get a little closer to 2500! This one was a fly out to right field in the 6th inning. He also had a chance in the 4th but was walked.
With 1 out in the 6th Wilin Rosario tried to get things going with a single, here he is clapping at first. He did not score after Arenado grounded out and Charlie Blackmon popped out to end the inning. Wilin was 3 for 4 with a double this game and 1 RBI.
Ex- Rockies Javier Lopez came into pitch for the Giants in the 8th inning. He struck out Helton and was than taken out of the game and replaced by Santiago Casilla. Yusmeiro Petit pitch 6 complete innings. Giving up 6 hits 2 runs walking 3 and striking out 6. A very good outing for only a second start in the Majors. The Rockies did seem to waste a bunch of opportunities to score only scoring 1 in the 4th leaving 3, a Rosario double in the 8th that was with 1 out and he did not score and a few other innings that could have amounted to a run or 2 more throughout the game. They did score a 3rd run in the 7th and so did the Giants. (5-3) Giants
Sergio Romo pitched the 9th for the Giants and put the Rockies down in order to end the game with the 5-3 final.
That was it for this game got 1 more left in this series and will be at Coors all week-end for the Reds Series.
After the game I took a photo of the banner that Alise had signed before the game by Todd Helton. It is a large banner he gave a great autograph on it.
So once again see you at Coors and thanks for reading.
San Fransisco Giants vs. Colorado Rockies
Today was the first gae of what seemed to be the never-ending road trip. It was 3 series on the east coast which means I missed a lot or most of the games played with the earlier start time. It was 12 days that they were away but it seemed like an eternity, So I was more than glad to be back at Coors. As I headed into batting practice a ball immediately flew out to the pavilions landed a few rows behind me and took a big bounce to the concourse. I ran up the stairs and grabbed it as someone was running down the concourse to also get it. I grabbed it and the dude was like really you are going to take it? As many of you guys know I hate when people think that the ball is theirs because they were within 10 feet of getting the ball and did not. So I tossed him the ball, I am kinda over arguing with these people about a ball so I figured I would give it up. Just don’t expect this to become a habit! So that was my first one, within a few minutes another headed my way and landed a few rows from me and I was able to snag it for my second ball of the game. This day was turning out to be a great batting practice. I was in the stadium not even 10 minutes and had already snagged 2. The Rockies were than done and I thought I may get a ball or 2 from the Giants their first group was right heavy and it included Buster Posey and Hunter Pence. They did hit a few out and I did not snag any more this batting practice. In the process of running around trying to get a ball from the Giants I ended up losing the ball I kept. Later on someone told me how they found a ball in the first row and gave it to a kid. So well I got a few to add to my numbers but not to my collection!
After Bp like any other day I headed over to the wall to see if I could get any autographs and i ended up getting a Todd Helton photo I recently printed up signed.
Juan Nicasio was the starting pitcher for the Rockies, his first pitch to the Giants Gregor Blanco was a ball. Juan did strike him out for the first out of the inning. The next batter Marco Scutaro hit a double.
Nicasio then struck out Brandon Belt for the second out and really seemed to have his stuff. He then did walk Buster Posey but came back to strike out Pablo Sandoval to end the inning. He worked out of the 2 runners on and struck out 3 great first inning performance by Juan.
Barry Zito was the starting pitcher for the Giants. Dexter Fowler started with a lead off single and was then out at second after trying to steal. It was close but he was called out.
He was removed from the game in the second because of something wrong with his knee which happened during the steal attempt.
Michael Cuddyer than hit a hard-line drive to right field which Hunter Pence had a run on till the wall got in his way, no it was not a homer it stayed in and Hunter hit the wall pretty hard and did not make the catch.
This is a photo from immediately after hitting the wall.
The Giants trainer and manager came running out to see if he was OK, he was down a while. He did stay in the game. I think it was the magic trainers towel that cured him of what ever injury he had. We always joke about how the trainers run out with the towel but what is it really for if there is not a cut or something.
With Cuddy on third Wilin Rosario came to bat and he grounded to Sandoval at third for the third out of the inning.
Nicasio then had another good inning in the second. He struck out Brandon Crawford, followed by a pop out by Francisco Peguro and struck out Zito for the third out. 5 strike outs in the first 2 innings.
Helton would get the Rockies on the board in the second with a 2 run home run for his 2497 hit of his career. Arenado lead the inning off with a single. Todd is now 3 hits away from #2500.
Nicasio faced 4 Giants batters in the 3rd walking Scutaro and giving up a hit to Brandon Belt. Posey hit into a double play to end the inning.
Charles Blackmon who replaced Dexter Fowler in the second inning started the third inning off with his 4th home run of the year. To give the Rockies a 3-0 lead.
Another one of those great Coors sunsets.
Nicasio had another 1,2,3 inning in the 4th and struck out 2 more Giants batters.
In the 4th inning with Arenado on third, Helton on second (reached base on a walk) and Charlie Culbertson on first Jonny Hererra hit a line drive over Brandon Crawfords head that caught Helton off guard looked like it was going to left for a single. Crawford grabbed it and threw back to second where Scutaro was covering the bag.
Helton made it back safe on the high throw.
Juan Nicasio added to his cause in the inning with one out and base’s loaded he hit a single to score Arenado from third to give he and the Rockies a 4-0 lead.
Arenado crossing home for the Rockies 4th run.
Zito pitching with Todd on third and Nicasio on first. Culbertson was also on second, but not in photo. Helton went on and scored in the inning. To give a 5-0 lead.
Wilin Rosario hit a double with 1 out in the 5th. He was picked of at second for the second out and Arenado flew out to left to end the inning.
Wilton Lopez came in and pitched in the 7th inning for the Rockies.
Nicasio pitched 6 complete striking out 9, walking 2, hitting 2 batters on 5 hits giving up no runs!
Lopez struck out Scutaro to end the 7th facing only 3 batters and recording 2 strike outs in the inning.
Jeff Francis cam into pitch for the Rockies in the 9th to make things interesting!
Sandoval lead off the inning with a fly out to right.
Looks like Cuddy misplayed it slightly but came up with the catch! After getting the 1st 2 batters out he had a tough time with out #27 of the game.
Peguero got a single and advanced to second on an offense indifference (stole the base without anyone caring)!
Joaquin Arias hit a pinch hit double to score the run.
Peguero scoring the Giants first run in the 9th inning 6-1 Rox
Then the 27th out came Finally came when Blanco flew out to Blackmon in center to end the game.
The Rockies 6th run came in the 7th, just incase you were wondering how the score was 6-1!!!
So that is it for this first game back at Coors for this home stand.
Well See you at Coors.
San Diego Padres vs. Colorado Rockies
Game 1 of series.
Today I missed batting practice got to a late start and got to the stadium a bit late. There was still about 5 or 10 minutes left but not very productive since the Padres were not hitting.
Jhoulys Chacin was the starting pitcher for this game Will Venerable lead off for the Padres.
Hit a lead off double. here he is after sliding into second.
The next batter Chris Denorfia walked then Chase Headley hit the ball to Todd Helton who threw to Troy Tulowitzki who was covering second, they did not get the double play just Denorfia at second.
They did get the Double play when Yonder Alonso hit the ball to D.J. LeMahieu at second. Venable would not score in the inning.
Edison Volquez was the starting pitcher for the Padres the Rockies immediately got things going against them. Dexter Fowler lead the inning with a single.
Corey Dickerson who is quickly becoming one of my favorite Rockies hit a double sending Dex to third. This was Corey’s 5th double since his call up in June.
heading to second base.
Troy Tulowitzki hitting the ball to fly out to center.
Wilin Rosario hit a single that scored Dex from third and Corey Dickerson from second this gave the Rockies a 2-0 lead.
Wilin Rosario advanced to third on a Nolan Arenado single and Error by Will Venable.
After another very good inning by Chacin in the second the Rockies kept the hits and runs coming. D.J. LeMahieu got the inning started with this swing for his second home run of the year to give the Rockies a 4 to 0 lead. The Rockies would get 2 more in this inning, Dex walked and Corey Dickerson would hit his second double in as many at bats/innings. This kid is just on fire and it is great to see him doing so well in the Majors. I am glad I have seen him play at almost every level of the Rockies organization and he was just as productive. A walk off in Ashville, an RBI triple in Kannapolis and a 2 run home run to break a tie in Tulsa. So just a few highlight of the few games I have seen him play in the Minors. I did also see him play in the Springs and I am sure he did just as well!
So back to the game Dickerson would than score on a hit by Tulo with a throwing error by Chase Headley at third. 6-0 Rox.
In the 5th inning after 5 Rockies batters got on base in a row Volquez was removed from the game by Bud Black.
Todd Helton started the inning off with a single followed by an Arenado single, Charlie Blackmon reached base, but Helton was out at third on the force. Arenado scored on a Sac Fly by Jhoulys Chacin.
Blackmon and D.J. LeMahieu scored on a Dexter Fowler single 8-0 Rockies.
The Padres did get a run in the 7th inning on a Jaff Decker home run his first of his career. 8-1 Rockies
The Umpires meet with the grounds crew in the middle of the 8th.
The field was starting to get very saturated and puddles started forming on the infield and home plate area and the tarp was brought out. Once again we were heading into a rain delay.
The Rain delay was an hour and 3 minutes in length after about 40 minutes into it the grounds crew headed out and took off the tarp and started repairing the field with diamond dry. So I got some photos of the process out of boredom.
After the field was fixed it was time to start the game again the came out like it was a new game.
Colt Hynes was the pitcher for the 8th inning for the Padres.
Corey Dickerson started the inning with a walk, followed by a Jonny Herrera single. Herrera came in at short for Tulo after the rain delay.
The runs started coming on this Wilin Rosario hit scoring Dickerson 9-1 Rockies.
Corey Dickerson crossing the plate for the first run of the inning.
Charlie Culbertson hit a single scoring Jonny Herrera from second.
The ball passes the infield as Rosario runs to second and Herrera makes the turn at third on the Culbertson single. (10-1) Rockies
Nolan Arenado hits his 8th inning single scoring Rosario
Wilin crossing the plate for the Rockies 11th run of the game and a 10 run lead. (11-1) Rockies
Chad Bettis came into pinch hit for Chacin’s spot in inning.
He reached on a missed catch by yonder Alfonso at first loading the bases. The next 2 runs would score on a Dexter Fowler double he would be out at third on the play and Dickerson popped out to end the inning in all the Rockies hit 6 single, 1 double and 1 walk in the inning for 6 runs.
Jeff Francis came in from the bullpen for the Rockies in the 9th. Faced 4 batters.
Getting Chase Headley to fly out to right and Alonso to ground out to LeMahieu who switched to first base. Things got shaky for Francis with the next batter Jedd Gyorko who hit a solo shot to right for the Padres 2nd run of the game 14-2 Rockies.
The last out was a grounder to Herrera at short hit by Logan Forsythe to end the game.
The Rockies won this first one against the Padres and the 4th win of this home stand which has been great for the fans. It may be a little late but it is nice to see them not give up and keep playing well. it has not always been too easy to watch this team but games like this make it worth it. The best part is the rookies and younger guys being so productive in these games D.J. LeMahieu has been playing incredibly in the field and with the bat, he was 3 for 4 this game with a home run and a double. He also walked in the 5th. Corey Dickerson has been a great addition since his call up from the Springs which I talked about earlier this game he reached base 4 out of his 6 at bats with 2 doubles. Can’t forget about Dexter Fowler this game with 4 RBI’s 3 hits and 2 walks getting on base every at bat and scoring 2 times.
That is it for this one.
Catching up on games for this series.
See you at Coors.
Pirates vs. Rockies
Today was interesting in batting practice with in about 30 seconds of getting to the pavilions I had a shot at 2 baseballs one fell short into the first row and the second was to my right and I ran down the Isle and over ran the ball and it skimmed of the top of my head not really not hitting me it just took off my hat! I did get that ball. During the Pirates batting Practice I came close to a few but did not catch any then there was a ball hit about 4 or five rows up on the other side of aisle so I headed towards it, I went to hope the rail between the sections like I have many times and missed the bleacher seat on the other side and landed in the seat hitting my head on the top of the seat, I ended up bruising my shoulder, skinning my left knee, getting a cut under my right eye and getting another cut on my left ankle and the next day had a sore rib, also did not get the ball. I think my pride was hurt more than the injuries!
Andrew McCutchen grounded out to third for the last out of the inning.
The Rockies also went down in order in the 1st inning against the Pirates starter A.J. Burnett. They did get a run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead
The Pirates got there first run and tie the game 1-1 in the 4th inning on a Russell Martin double.
Roger (Troy Tulowitzki) Dorn argues a strike out looking call once agin. Getting kicked out for it was just not enough. Sooner or later they are just gonna start tossing him more.
Garrett Jones slid into third in the 6th inning for a triple scoring Russell Martin from first and the Pirates took a 2-1 lead. Jones would also score on a Jose Tabata single 3-1 Pirates.
The Rockies fort back immediately in the 6th when Michael Cuddyer got things started with a single and advanced to second on a fly ball hit to center and Cuddy tagged up and reached second great hustle play by him in my opinion this is what really got the motivation for this team up.
Nolan Arenado than hit a double scoring Cuddy (3-2) Pirates. The next batter Jonny Herrera walk to have runners on first and second.
Charlie Blackmon came into pinch hit for Nicasio and hit a double to score Arenado to tie the game at 3.
Herrera and Blackmon both scored on a Dexter Fowler single for a 5-3 lead.
Dexter Fowler at second with the fist bump to Rene Lacheman.
Clint Hurdle would remove Burnett from the game after the Fowler at bat and Tony Watson would come into pitch for the Rockies.
Corey Dickerson hit a single to left field scoring Fowler and advancing to third on a throw from Starling Marte that Pedro Alvarez missed.
Corey Dickerson rounding first.
Fowler sliding into third as Alvarez gets the ball.
but does not hold onto the ball to score Fowler.
Corey Dickerson reaching third.
Josh Outman pitched the 7th inning for the Rockies he started the inning by giving up a single to Josh Harrison on the first pitch of the inning. He hit the next batter Starling Marte. Alex Presley came in to pinch run for him. Neil Walker hit into a double play that Clint Hurdle did not agree with!!
He came out and was arguing with 2nd base umpire Adrian Johnson.
He must of said some key words because well Adrian Johnson tossed him from the game. it was awesome to see a manager get fired up!
Rex Brothers came in the 9th inning. He walked Gabby Sanchez to start the inning. Things got rough after he allowed the Next 2 batters Alex Presley and Neil Walker hit singles Sanchez scored on the Walker single which cut into the Rockies 3 run lead.
Walt Weiss heads out to the mound to talk to Rex.
It must have worked!
Brothers than struck out McCutchen and..
Alvarez to end the game and the Rockies won the second against the Pirate 6-4.
That is it for the second game from the Pirates series got another from this series.
So see you at Coors!

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies
Game 1 of Series
My 51st game at Coors this year.
Since I came directly from work I arrived at Coors early for the 6:40 game. I got to the players entrance at about 2:35 and see if I could get any autographs. Earlier in the morning before I left for work I grabbed a 2012 All-Star ball that I had left from last year I have been meaning to bring it to see who I could get to sign it. After being there about 10 minutes a Car pulled up and it was The Pirates All-Star center fielder Andrew McCutchen who got out which was great because he happened to be the 2012 All-Star for the Pirates and I had him sign the ball. Another 5 minutes or so past when a Taxi pulled up and inside was Starling Marte who is in his first full year with the Pirates was in the Taxi. I have seen him play a few times over the last few years when going to Indianapolis and seeing the Indians play. He stopped and I had him sign what I am going to use as a Pirates team Item a photo of PNC Park in Pittsburgh that I had taken on a road trip in 2010.
this is the photo I had printed as a 11X14.
After doing real good with autographs out there I headed around to the Rockpile Gate and waited about an hour for the gates to open.
Then it was time for the game and I headed over to my usual spot and watched the game.
Jorge De La Rosa was the starting pitcher for the Rockies. At first things did not look like they would go well for Jorge today. Pirates lead-off batter Starling Marte got on base on the first pitch by hitting a single.
He would attempt to steal second while Jordy Mercer was batting and got caught for the first out of the game.
Mercer ended up hitting a single followed by a Andrew McCutchen single that (Roger Dorn) Troy Tulowitzki watched go by.
McCutchen hitting his single in the first.
Russell Martin also hit a single and load the base’s. Jorge turned it up and struck out Pedro Alverez and then Gaby Sanchez grounded out and ended the inning Jorge managed to get himself out of a tough inning very nice work by him. Jorge threw 26 pitched in the inning.
For those who do not get the Roger Dorn reference go rent Major League!
The Pirates starter was Francisco Liriano who came into the game with a 12-5 record for the year and a 2.83 ERA in 17 games. Dexter Fowler started the game of with a hard-line drive out to Mercer at short and it seemed like OK so this is how the game is going to go It will be a quick inning for the Rockies which has been somewhat the norm lately. But the next batter D.J. LeMahieu got and incredible inning started with a single, (RODO) Tulo managed to scrape together a walk. Michael Cuddyer hit a single which scored LeMahieu from second and (Rodo) Tulo advanced to third.
Wilin Rosario hit a double to right scoring Tulo and Cuddy who was on first.
Jose Tabata chases the ball into the right field corner.
Cuddy crossing the plate after Rosarios double. (3-0) Rox
Rosario scored on a Todd Helton single to make it a 4-0 game.
Jorge De La Rosa was the ninth batter of the inning for the Rockies he hit a pretty good shot to left and flew out. For a pitcher it was pretty good contact.
Neil Walker started the 2nd inning off the same way Marte did with a single he didn’t do it on one pitch, instead it was 3 but he got on base. As shown above he would eventually score the Pirates first run of the game. Jorge did walk 2 batters and give a single again to Marte. Walker scored on a sac-fly to center. (4-1) Rox
The Rockies and Wilin Rosario did not hold back in the 2nd inning. Fowler singled to start the inning and then LeMahieu flew out and Tulo would strike out looking for the 5 run game winning home run, oohhh wait we were already up by 3 nevermind! With 2 outs Cuddy hit a single scoring Dex who advanced to second on a throwing error on his single and tagged up to 3rd on LeMahieu fly out. (5-0) Rox Wilin Rosario did not let it end there he hit a 2 run home run to put the Rockies up 7-0. Yeah we got Tacos and it is only the second inning! It still did not stop Helton singled and scored on a Nolan Arenado single.
Arenado came home on a Charlie Culbertson double (9-0) Rox unfortunately the 2 out rally ended with the third out of the inning a hit back to Liriano by de La Rosa for the out. Once again the Rockies sent 9 guys to the plate in an inning.
Liriano was taken out off the game in the 3rd inning with 1 out and Vin Mazzaro came in to pitch for the Pirates. So Lirianos ERA jumped 3.14 after his 2.1 inning and well not to give away the ending he also recorded his 3rd lose of the year. The Rockies did get a 10th run in the third Fowler lead off this inning with a walk and scored on a Michael Cuddyer hit a ball to Mercer who tossed to Walker at second to get the hustling Tulo at second. Who am I kidding even if he was hustling he would have been out but Cuddys hustle did beat out the double play.
Alex Presley pinched hit in the pitchers spot in the for the Pirates in the 6th inning. He is another guy I have seen a few times in Indy. He was actually with them last month when I was there.
Jorge was taken out of the game after 5 innings. with a high pitch count and a 9 run lead. he pitched 106 pitches striking out 3 and walking 3, he gave up that 1 run on 8 hits he managed to work him out of 2 rough innings and pitched well the last 3 he pitched. I am sure run support helped his performance.
Clint Hurdle removes his third pitcher of the game Jared Hughs from the game with 2 outs and replaced him with infielder Josh Harrison.
Harrison faced Corey Dickerson who came into pinch hit in the for the pitchers spot and flew out to left.
Rex Brothers closed the game in the 9th for the Rockies not without a little drama but did get the 3 outs and ended the game.
Jonny Hererra tried to turn a double play after getting Marte out at second. Mercer got on first.
The third out was a hit to Jonny again to get Tony Sanchez out at first to end the game. Yorvit Torrealba was playing first in the 9th for the Rockies. He did bat in Heltons spot in the 8th inning.
The Rockies won this one 10-1.
Great way to start a home stand lets keep it going guys.
After the game we headed out to the players entrance again and got Pirates player Neil Walker on my 11×14 and Walt Weiss stopped and he signed 2 cards for me.
Brewers vs. Rockies
My 50th Game at Coors this Year. 63rd including Road Trip and The Springs. I believe this is the correct #’s seems like I always miss a game somewhere when counting think I totally got it!
Another fun Sunday at Coors said slightly sarcastically by the blogger who hates amateur days at the stadium. As usual it was a bobble head day and also autograph Sunday which the combination of the 2 is just horrible which I have mentioned before. I will repeat what I have said before about having to get to Coors at the same time on bobble head Sundays with a 2 PM game as we use to for the 1 PM games last year, because of parking and the demand for bobble heads. thrown in the mix is the usual autograph Sunday which become a cluster because the signs and lines are not set up when gates are opened or who the signers may be. Today it was announced that the signers were Charlie Blackmon, Adam Ottavino, Rex Brothers and TBA. So when we got in the signs were not posted for the line for who is where. So I got into the 4th line hoping that the TBA would be there and someone I would need. So for the 40 minutes that we had to wait in line the TBA was announced and it was to be Wilin Rosario he was going to be in the first line which was already very long Rex Brothers was the second line, Adam Ottavino would third and Charlie Blackmon would be the 4th. So I did not have anything for Charlie, but stayed in his line anyway and had him sign a 8X10 of the same photo that I have the 16×20 of that I am using for my team project. I was unable to get anyone else so I just waited around. In another twist the first lined ended up being D.J. LeMahieu. Thankfully that was the last Sunday with a Bobble head and it will return to normal autograph Sunday set up for the remaining Sundays. Not to forget the bobble head today was Ellis Burks.
Jhoulys Chacin was the starting pitcher for the Rockies he immediately got to work striking out Rickie Weeks. Norichika Aoki grounded out and Jonathan Lucroy flew out to left field. he got the inning over quick and with just 11 pitches.
Donovan Hand started for the Brewers. After getting Dexter Fowler and Corey Dickerson out Troy Tulowitzki hit a solo shot to get the Rockies on the board. now this is a good time to hit a solo home run, early in a game to get your team on the board!
Tulo watches as the ball heads to left field. (1-0) Rockies.
The Brewers than proceeded to score a run in the 2nd third and 4th. (3-1) Brewers.
This guy had a pretty good seat for the game!
Yes you see this correctly that is Todd Helton making the turn at second for a triple in the 4th inning!
Todd at third base. This was his first this year and only the third in the last 5 years, he did also have 1 last year! In his career he has a total of 37 and had 3 seasons with 5 that being a career high for a season. The 5 Triples came in 1999, 2003 and 2006.
The Rockies or the Brewers scored again till the 6th inning. The Rockies picked up 2 runs in the 6th.
Corey Dickerson hit his first MLB home run to lead off the inning and 2 batters later Michael Cuddyer hit a solo shot to tie the game at 3. The Rockies would regain the lead on a third solo home run in the 7th inning. That one was hit by Dexter Fowler and gave the Rockies a 4-3 lead.
In the Brewers half of the 8th the brewers would once again get the lead with 2 runs in the inning. Yuniesky Betancourt hit a home run with Carlos Gomez on third, he reached third after hitting a double and stealing the base the Brewers now had a 5-4 lead.
Matt Belilse came into pitch for the Rockies in the 8th inning. Chacin pitched 7 giving up the 3 runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th. He gave up 8 hits walked 1 and struck out 4.
Cuddyer hitting a double in the 8th inning. Scoring Tulo who lead off the inning with a double to once again tie the game.
The Cuddy hustle down the first base line.
Tulo rounding third and heading for home.
Cuddy taking out short stop Jeff Bianchi as the ball goes past second base.
Tulo stepping on home to tie the game at 5.
Bianchi gear looked like a garage sale,(Snowboard/Ski term for losing your Sh!t on a fall) yes that is his glove about 10 feet behind second.
John Axford started the 8th inning for the brewers, here’s a hint he did not finish it!
Cuddy stealing third base.
Here he is scoring after a Arenado single. This gave the Rockies a 6-5 lead.
Khris Davis pinch hit in the 9th for the Brewers,
he lined out to Cuddy in right.
Rickie Weeks gets a piece of this Rex Brothers fast ball.
Weeks running for first.
The ball was hit back to Brothers and he made a throw to Helton at first.
He threw the ball high and Helton made a great save pulling this one out of air.
But did not land back on the base in time and Weeks got a single. I think when Helton landed he did not hit the bag.
Aoki ended the game with a fly ball to Dexter Fowler.
The Rockies would win this game 6-5 and the series 2-1 and go 5 and 5 this home stand. They really needed wins this home stand. Playing against the Cubs, Miami and the Brewers. The should have won at least to or even 3 more games against these teams. They are 3 of the 4 worst teams in the National League.
Well that is it for this one, It was a win before they hit the road. I finally caught up and they return from the road trip against the Pirates on Friday.
See you at Coors.
Thought I was gonna get some games in at the Spring and Grand Junction this week, but looks like it is not happening. Guess I got to get some hiking and me time in before they return home!
Brewers vs. Rockies
So today I tried something a little different instead of rushing to the stadium to be there for 4 O’clock when the gates opened I left my house about 4:10 and got into the stadium about 4:45. I missed the Rockies BP and the Brewers were hitting when I got into Coors. With in about 10 minutes of being there I got a BP baseball. Not bad for slacking and showing up 45 minutes late! Not that this will start a new trend of showing up late, it just shows sometimes I don’t have to put in as much time to get a ball.
Today was the Rockies debut of Colin McHugh he was the pitcher we had gotten from the Mets for Eric Young Jr. McHugh has been in the majors before with not much success, His best game was last Aug. in his MLB debut against the Rockies at Citifield in NY. He has been pitching well in Triple A Las Vegas this year with a 3-2 record. After being traded the Rockies optioned him to Double A Tulsa. He was brought up to see if he could fill the Rockies available starting spot. which has been kind of revolving door this season for the Rockies.
Before warm ups Todd Helton stopped and signed a few autographs. As usual when he signs it was a mob of people rushing over to where he was. I came close to getting one this time but did not. I do have a few cards for him to sign but nothing that is important to finishing team sets or anything.
Here is Colin McHugh throwing his first pitch to Rickie Weeks. It was a fastball for a called strike. Not a bad start but that did not last long the second pitch was a ball and the third was a hit to left field resulting into a double and later a run. weeks advanced to third on a Norichika Aoki sac-bunt and scored on a Jean Segura single. Jonathan Lucroy hit another double for the Brewers 2 batters later and that put Segura on 3rd., he would than score on a Carlos Gomez sac-fly to right. Lucroy scored on a Caleb Gindl double for a 3-0 Brewers lead.
Segura diving back to first after his single.
Here is Segura sliding at home for the Brewers second run.
Jim Wright visiting the Mound in the first inning.
The Rockies hitter did not do much in the first against the Brewers starting pitcher Tom Gorzelanny. Dexter Fowler flew out to right to start the inning and then D.J. LeMahieu and Troy Tulowitzki both struck out.
Tulo discussing the called strike with home plate umpire Dana Demuth.
McHugh settled down a little in the 4th only facing 3 batters, he did get a slightly inside on Jean Segura who got hit by a pitch but did not get the base because it was during a swing for a strike.
The Rockies tried to get the game back in the 6th. here is D.J. LeMahieu sliding into home for the first Rockies run of the game on a Tulo single.
The Brewers would get a 7th run in the 7th. a solo home run by Lucroy off Adam Ottavino. Ottavino came in to pitch in the 6th inning. McHugh went 5 full innings giving up 6 runs on 9 hits walking 1 and striking out 2. Ottavino pitched the 6th and 7th the only hit he allowed was the home run to Lucroy.
Corey Dickerson pinch hit for the pitcher in the 7th. He hit a single with one out.
Dexter Fowler reached also in the 7th on an error by first baseman Francisco. He would get out after LeMahieu hit into a double play to end the inning. The Brewers manager did come out to argue the call with first base umpire Cory Blaser.
The Rockies did get a run in the 8th. another one of those To Little to late solo home runs to lead off the inning by Tulo. Glad to see him hitting but where are these home runs with runners on when we are down by 3.
Jim Henderson pitching for the brewers in the 9th inning. he was the Brewers 4th pitcher of the night. Their starter Gorzelanny went 6 innings and was responsible for 4 of the Rockies runs. Henderson would strike out both Nolan Arenado and Charlie Blackmon.
Jonny Herrera came into pinch hit for the pitchers spot but flew out to right to end the game. So the Rockies let this one get away with a bad pitching attempted by McHugh and lack of runs support even know they did score 5. The final was 7-5 and that was it for game to against the Brew Crew.
Still playing catch up with the last home series. While I am writing this the Rockies are getting ready for game 2 against the Pirates in Pittsburgh. After the very bad series in Atlanta they did get the first game against the Pirates who have been real hot lately lets hope they can cool them down this week since they have to face them back at Coors next week.
I would also like to thank everone who follows the Rox Addict blog once again I made the top 50 at #42 for the month of July.
Till then I will see you at Coors.
Also remember you still have time to answer the Roxivus trivia Question just email me the answer firstname.lastname@example.org
You can find the question in this link: http://roxaddict.mlblogs.com/2013/07/23/roxivus-whatever-that-means-and-game-one-of-the-cubs-series/
I am going to have the winner pick the prize there are a few autographs and some 20th anniversary items up for grabs.
This being a day game there was no batting practice. So it was just a bunch of hanging out before the game.
Juan Nicasio was the starter for the Rockies. He pitched one of the best games I have seen him pitch in a long time he pitched 7 scoreless innings. Only giving up 2 hits, walking 1 and striking out 9. 2 of the strike outs were in the 1st. inning. He struck out Christian Yelich and Logan Morrison. Also in the 1st was one of the hits and that was a double to Giancarlo (Mike) Stanton.
D.J. LeMahieu hit to the Marlins second baseman at this at bat in the 1st. inning for the second out of the inning.
Carlos Gonzalez getting ready to swing at his 1st. inning at bat.
Here he is taking another swing in which was a strike and he did strike out this at bat.
Charlie Blackmon made an awesome catch in foul territory to get Donovan Solano out in the second inning. This was the best photo from the catch because the security guard get in the way while Charlie was making the catch.
Nicasio’s final line under the first photo!
Nicasio pitching in the 7th inning as it started to rain at Coors.
During the 7th inning stretch the grounds crew pulled out the tarp after the Marlins started taking the field but the rain did start to get really heavy. There was than a 1 hour and 33 minute delay. The game was still scoreless to this point.
He is some boredom photography from the rain delay!
After the tarp came off the field and the sun came out Dan Jennings came into the game for the Marlins starter. Nathan Evoldi who pitched 6 scoreless innings. The Rockies got 3 hits and walked twice, he struck out 4.
Adam Ottavino pitched the 8th inning for the Rockies and after starting real strong striking out the first 2 batters he faced he gave up 2 singles and a run.
The run was scored on a wild pitch scoring Rob Brantly from third. (1-0) Marlins
Troy Tulowitzki who sat this game pinch hit in the pitches spot in the 8th. here he let a strike sneak by!
He made contact and…………(ooooh Suspense)
…..and popped it up to…..
… the Marlins pitcher Chad Qualls. That is a little different from popping out to the first or third base man.
The 9th inning Wilton Lopez came into pitch and they may as well put a batting tee at home plate for the Marlins to hit from. Christian Yelich hit a ground rule double to start the inning.
followed by this Stanton double as a result Yelich would score the Marlins second run. Morrison would make the first out of the inning but with one out Ed Lucas hit a single and Solano would go deep with a 2 run home run with the third and fourth run of the inning. giving the Marlins a 5-0 lead. Now I have mentioned before about Lopez’s poor performances but he has had really good innings and every 4th or 5th appearance he just totally falls apart.
Wilton Lopez coming of the field after the Solano home run. Mitchell Boggs would pitch for the Rockies and get the next to batters to ground out and got the Rockies out of the 8th inning.
After Rosario’s double the Marlins brought in their closer Steve Cishek.
Jonny Herrera ended the game by hitting into a double play and the Rockies would lose for the 5-3 and the series 3-1. Now this was a pretty good pitching series and the bats were not there for the most part.
So I am finally done with the Marlins series and now on to the Brewers series!!!
It was a little better than this one! I hope I can get throw the next 3 games before the Rockies return next week.
Well that’s it for this one.
Keep checking back for the rest of the post from what seemed like the never-ending home stand!
