Cincinnati Reds vs. Colorado Rockies
My 60th game at Coors this year! 73rd including the Springs and Road trip.
It was raining so the tarp was on the field so it was a trip to the Sports Colum to pass the time with the incognito Rockpile Ranter!
Jorge De La Rosa was the starting pitcher for the Rockies this night. The first batter he faced Shin-Soo Choo flew out to Charlie Culberson in left field.
Brandon Phillips put one over Charlie Blackmon’s head in right field.
Brandon Philips sliding into second base. He would be left on base as the next 2 batters would both get out.
Dickerson would score on a D.J. LeMahieu double. D.J. would get caught stealing third base. Troy Tulowitzki walked and Wilin Rosario hit into a double play to third getting Tulo at second and himself at first to end the inning.
The Reds answered back with a run in the second inning, Todd Frazier scored on a Ryan Hanigan single to left field. tied 1-1
The Reds would take the lead in the 4th inning after a Frazier lead of double. He would score on a Hanigan single to center this time. (2-1) Reds
Todd Helton came to bat in the 4th with Tulo and Rosario on base and hit a 3 run home run to put the Rockies up 4-2. This was his 2498 hit of his career, 364th home run and 1390th RBI.
Todd high-five Charlie Blackmon as he, Rosario and Tulo head back to the dugout! One of my favorite photos from this weekend.
Charlie Culberson hit a double to score Nolan Arenado and Charlie Blackmon.
After the Reds score 1 run in the 5th on a Ryan Ludwig home run not much happened till the 7th inning when…..
…Todd Helton did it again. Hit # 2499 was his second home run of the night another 3 run home run, the Rockies now had a 8-3 lead. He was now just 1 hit away from 2500 lifetime hits.
Here he is with the crowd on their feet as he rounds 1st. Once again he scored Tulo and Rosario.
The score board after the home run.
In the 7th inning Adam Ottavino came to bat with and hit his second MLB hit career! It was a single to right field.
The Reds scored 2 runs in the 9th off of Jeff Francis. Seems like he comes in with a big lead just to make the game a little more interesting. (9-5) Rockies. Jay Bruce made the final out of the game a ground out to LeMahieu at second.
Wilin celebrates the Rockies win over the Reds!
the Rest of the team celebrates this game against the Reds.
This was a very exciting night at Coors. In the Bottom of the 8th Helton had his first attempt at his 2500 hit but struck out. It has been an interesting week between Chacin’s almost no-hitter and following Todd’s quest for 2500! Todd went 2 for 5 tonight with 6 RBI’s and the 2 home runs. Jorge pitched 6 innings giving up 8 hits, 3 runs, walking 2 and striking out 3. Adam Ottavino pitched 2 innings facing 6 batters and striking out 1. Jay Bruce in the 7th. So that is it for this one.
Got another from this series!
See You at Coors.
Padres vs. Rockies game 3 of series.
Series tied 1-1
Today being a day game there was no batting practice. so it was a lot of time and try and get autographs at the wall. It was a pretty good day for that because I had a few new photos printed up. So I got Rex Brothers to sign a photo. Then Carlos Gonzalez signed after he was done working out on the field. I had him sign the photo of him being interviewed at Fenway Park by Cowboy and Jenny. I then headed over to the pre game set and got Cowboy and Jenny to sign it. I also had him sign a card.
Here he is signing along the wall. While he was signing Robert asked him if he had a glove for him that he promised him a few years ago. so after he was done signing he ran down to the clubhouse and a few minutes later came out with this…
..and signed it!
Before the game Kurt Bucsh throw out the first pitch.
He is currently the driver of the #78 car in the Nascar Sprint Cup Series They are the Denver area based team and the only Nascar team base west of the Mississippi. I have met him once in the garage in Charlotte when he was driving the Miller car. So it was kinda interesting to see him in Denver throwing a baseball. Other furniture row drivers have also thrown out the first pitch in the past.
Jorge De La Rosa was the starting pitcher for the Rockies. He put the Padres down in order in the first and second inning.
Corey Dickerson with 2 outs did it once again he hit a double. This was his 7th since being called up and 3rd this series.
The Padres tied it in the 3rd with a run on a Chris Denorfia single score Ronnie Cedano from second.
dexter Fowler lead-off the 3rd with a single and scored on a Corey Dickerson triple. His second since being called up. Dickerson scored on a Troy Tulowitzki single. (3-1)Rox
The Padres would get one back in the 4th inning to make the score 3-2 Rockies. After Jedd Gyorko hit a one out doubled and scored on a Jesus Guzman single.
After the 3rd the Rockies sat down in order for 4 straight innings. De La Rosa pitched 7 innings allowing 2 runs on 8 hits striking out 6 and walking only one batter. Chris Denorfia in the 5th.
In the 6th inning Yorvit Torrealba made one of the most interesting double plays I have seen in along time if not ever. With Jedd Gyorko at third and Jesus Guzman at first, Logan Forsythe hit a ball to Nolan Arenado at third who threw home to Yorvit he chase Gyorko back towards third and tagged him while that was happening Guzman started running to third after Yorvit tagged Gyorko he dove in front of Guzman for the out at third. He made an unassisted double play at third base.
This is him after the play. I did not have the camera ready and could not get it fast enough to get the play. Really wish I had the whole sequence.
Tulo giving him the fist bump after the play. People at the beginning of the year asked why we got him back it is plays like this.
Jorge still pitching in the 7th inning.
Matt Belilse Pitched the 8th for the Rockies. Getting all 3 batters he faced out in the inning.
Corey Dickerson trying to stretch a sure double his 8th, into a not so much triple being tagged out at third after a soft hit over Cedano’s head at short. Dexter Fowler did score the Rockies 4th run of the game on the hit by Dickerson.
After a strike out looking to end the 8th inning look who is arguing with the ump?!!
Rex Brothers pitched in the 9th inning for the save his 11th of the year. Rafael Betancourt did return during the road stand and will be the closer again.
The Rockies went on to win this game 4-2.
Corey Dickerson was player of the game going 3 for 4 with 2 double and a triple and 2 RBI’s and was batting .321 after this his game in 33 games with 78 at bats. 12 for extra bases including his 2 home runs.
I think this will not be his only player of the game he seems to have quite a future with this team hope he keeps it up.
So that is it for this home satnd the Rockies were a very good 5-1 in the series with the big sweep against the Pirates and taking 2 from the Padres. They are currently 1-2 on the road trip losing the 3 game series to the Orioles.
Well with the season quickly dwindling see you at Coors when the Rockies are home against the san Francisco Giants next Monday the 26th.
Thanks for reading and Follow me on twitter @RoxAddict
WOW, I AM SO RUNNING OUT OF TITLE NAMES!!!!!!!
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies
Game 1 of Series
My 51st game at Coors this year.
Since I came directly from work I arrived at Coors early for the 6:40 game. I got to the players entrance at about 2:35 and see if I could get any autographs. Earlier in the morning before I left for work I grabbed a 2012 All-Star ball that I had left from last year I have been meaning to bring it to see who I could get to sign it. After being there about 10 minutes a Car pulled up and it was The Pirates All-Star center fielder Andrew McCutchen who got out which was great because he happened to be the 2012 All-Star for the Pirates and I had him sign the ball. Another 5 minutes or so past when a Taxi pulled up and inside was Starling Marte who is in his first full year with the Pirates was in the Taxi. I have seen him play a few times over the last few years when going to Indianapolis and seeing the Indians play. He stopped and I had him sign what I am going to use as a Pirates team Item a photo of PNC Park in Pittsburgh that I had taken on a road trip in 2010.
this is the photo I had printed as a 11X14.
After doing real good with autographs out there I headed around to the Rockpile Gate and waited about an hour for the gates to open.
Then it was time for the game and I headed over to my usual spot and watched the game.
Jorge De La Rosa was the starting pitcher for the Rockies. At first things did not look like they would go well for Jorge today. Pirates lead-off batter Starling Marte got on base on the first pitch by hitting a single.
He would attempt to steal second while Jordy Mercer was batting and got caught for the first out of the game.
Mercer ended up hitting a single followed by a Andrew McCutchen single that (Roger Dorn) Troy Tulowitzki watched go by.
McCutchen hitting his single in the first.
Russell Martin also hit a single and load the base’s. Jorge turned it up and struck out Pedro Alverez and then Gaby Sanchez grounded out and ended the inning Jorge managed to get himself out of a tough inning very nice work by him. Jorge threw 26 pitched in the inning.
For those who do not get the Roger Dorn reference go rent Major League!
The Pirates starter was Francisco Liriano who came into the game with a 12-5 record for the year and a 2.83 ERA in 17 games. Dexter Fowler started the game of with a hard-line drive out to Mercer at short and it seemed like OK so this is how the game is going to go It will be a quick inning for the Rockies which has been somewhat the norm lately. But the next batter D.J. LeMahieu got and incredible inning started with a single, (RODO) Tulo managed to scrape together a walk. Michael Cuddyer hit a single which scored LeMahieu from second and (Rodo) Tulo advanced to third.
Wilin Rosario hit a double to right scoring Tulo and Cuddy who was on first.
Jose Tabata chases the ball into the right field corner.
Cuddy crossing the plate after Rosarios double. (3-0) Rox
Rosario scored on a Todd Helton single to make it a 4-0 game.
Jorge De La Rosa was the ninth batter of the inning for the Rockies he hit a pretty good shot to left and flew out. For a pitcher it was pretty good contact.
Neil Walker started the 2nd inning off the same way Marte did with a single he didn’t do it on one pitch, instead it was 3 but he got on base. As shown above he would eventually score the Pirates first run of the game. Jorge did walk 2 batters and give a single again to Marte. Walker scored on a sac-fly to center. (4-1) Rox
The Rockies and Wilin Rosario did not hold back in the 2nd inning. Fowler singled to start the inning and then LeMahieu flew out and Tulo would strike out looking for the 5 run game winning home run, oohhh wait we were already up by 3 nevermind! With 2 outs Cuddy hit a single scoring Dex who advanced to second on a throwing error on his single and tagged up to 3rd on LeMahieu fly out. (5-0) Rox Wilin Rosario did not let it end there he hit a 2 run home run to put the Rockies up 7-0. Yeah we got Tacos and it is only the second inning! It still did not stop Helton singled and scored on a Nolan Arenado single.
Arenado came home on a Charlie Culbertson double (9-0) Rox unfortunately the 2 out rally ended with the third out of the inning a hit back to Liriano by de La Rosa for the out. Once again the Rockies sent 9 guys to the plate in an inning.
Liriano was taken out off the game in the 3rd inning with 1 out and Vin Mazzaro came in to pitch for the Pirates. So Lirianos ERA jumped 3.14 after his 2.1 inning and well not to give away the ending he also recorded his 3rd lose of the year. The Rockies did get a 10th run in the third Fowler lead off this inning with a walk and scored on a Michael Cuddyer hit a ball to Mercer who tossed to Walker at second to get the hustling Tulo at second. Who am I kidding even if he was hustling he would have been out but Cuddys hustle did beat out the double play.
Alex Presley pinched hit in the pitchers spot in the for the Pirates in the 6th inning. He is another guy I have seen a few times in Indy. He was actually with them last month when I was there.
Jorge was taken out of the game after 5 innings. with a high pitch count and a 9 run lead. he pitched 106 pitches striking out 3 and walking 3, he gave up that 1 run on 8 hits he managed to work him out of 2 rough innings and pitched well the last 3 he pitched. I am sure run support helped his performance.
Clint Hurdle removes his third pitcher of the game Jared Hughs from the game with 2 outs and replaced him with infielder Josh Harrison.
Harrison faced Corey Dickerson who came into pinch hit in the for the pitchers spot and flew out to left.
Rex Brothers closed the game in the 9th for the Rockies not without a little drama but did get the 3 outs and ended the game.
Jonny Hererra tried to turn a double play after getting Marte out at second. Mercer got on first.
The third out was a hit to Jonny again to get Tony Sanchez out at first to end the game. Yorvit Torrealba was playing first in the 9th for the Rockies. He did bat in Heltons spot in the 8th inning.
The Rockies won this one 10-1.
Great way to start a home stand lets keep it going guys.
After the game we headed out to the players entrance again and got Pirates player Neil Walker on my 11×14 and Walt Weiss stopped and he signed 2 cards for me.
Marlins vs. Rockies
Jorge de La Rosa was the starting pitcher for the Rockies. He struck out the Marlins first batter Adeiny Hechavarria He then walked Christian Yelich this was the 4th time in 5 MLB at bats he was on base. After the walk to Yelich he struck out Giancarlo (Mike) Stanton gave up a single to Ed Lucas who got out at second on a Placido Polanco hit to Rockies third base man Nolan Arenado who threw it over to D.J. LeMahieu at second for the third out of the inning.
In the Rockies first Dexter Fowler would fly out to left field and LeMahieu hit back to Miami’s pitcher Jacob Turner who threw to first for the second out Carlos Gonzalez hit a single but was caught stealing at second. I think he was safe but can’t fully tell but by where his left hand is and the ball is I think the left hand hit the bag before the ball hit the glove.
For a few days people were mentioning that they have not seen Roy Oswalt around well there was a siting he was in the dugout for this game.
The Rockies scoring began in the 2nd inning after Todd Helton hit his 579th double of his career with 2 outs. He than scored on a Nolan Arenado double. The 579th double now puts Helton in soul position of 19th passing Wade Boggs who he was tied with at 578. Next on the list is H.O.F Cap Anson. Played from 1871 (his career started 102 years before Helton was born) Anson played for 26 years with the Rockford Forest City’s, Philadelphia Athletics and Chicago White Stockings/Colts. He also managed during his playing career for the Athletics in 1875 and 1879-1897 for Chicago. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939, 17 years after his death at the age of 69.
Now back to the game.
The Rockies got the lead 1-0
Not Much happened till the 5th inning when they scored their 2nd run of the game. When Yorvit Torrealba scored on a LeMahieu sac-fly to center. Torrealba got on base with single advanced to third on a Fowler single. (2-0) Rox
No this is not #580 it was a single that resulted into an extra base when the Marlins Hechavarria made a throwing error to first. Michael Cuddyer did get out at second but Todd was not doubled up and advanced to second.
De La Rosa pitched a great game he pitched 6 scoreless innings and gave up 5 hits, walking 1 and striking out 5. Edgmer Escolona came in and pitched in the 7th. He let up 2 singles and hit pinch hitter Gregg Dobbs.
Josh Outman then came into pitch to Yelich and after striking him out was replaced by Wilton Lopez.
Wilton pitched to Stanton and he hit to third and Arenado touched the bag to get out Jeff Mathis.
After walking in the 8th Michael Cuddyer stole second base.
The Rockies were only up by 1 in the 8th The Marlins picked up a run with a little small ball off of struggling reliever Matt Belilse. Besides the run he gave up 3 hits. He did strike out Justin Ruggiano to end the inning.
Rex Brothers came in for the save in the 9th besides the walk to Stanton who would end up being the last out of the game on a force at second he pitched well striking out Hechavarria and Yelich grounding out. Yelich did not have as good of a game as his debut the only time he was on base this game was on the 1st inning walk he was 0 for 4 his next 4 at bats.
LeMahieu tossing to Tulo for the last out of the game.
Torrealba and Brothers high-five after the out and that was the game. The Rockies won this one 2-1.
Well that is it for this one as I continue to play catch-up with this home stand I have 1 more from this series and the 3 against the Brewers. Check back to see those photos.
Also remember I am doing a contest, Answer the question besides Jason Jennings who are the other 3 Rockies pitchers to record 10 wins before the All-Star break. Name 2 of the others. email: Rox_addict@yahoo.com with answer there is a under score between the x and a.
7-18-2013 / 7-19-2013
Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
Yes, I am back home after the road trip!
This is 2 days in one entry because the first day Thursday the 18th was the 1st Day of Roxivus. Which was this years version of Rockies Fest which is usually held in January before the team heads to spring training. So the name Roxivus had us asking the question of what is Roxivus stand for and 4 days later we still really don’t know! So I looked up to see if Ivus means anything in other languages and well it did not. The only thing that I could find that had any resembled the IVUS was an acronym for digital imaging process Intravascular ultrasound. If you really need to know what it is here is the Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IVUS. Some even thought it was a play on word from the Seinfeld’s show’s Festivus. Another look at the word it may incorporate the Roman Numeral for 4 (IV), so it would mean Rox 4 us. So draw your own conclusion to the meaning of the word Roxivus to us regulars it was a fan fest!
So what they did was brought in a bunch of former players from the past 20 years of the Rockies history a bunch from the late 90’s and early 2000’s. The players were Brian Fuentes, Josh Fogg, Jason Jennings, Pedro Astacio, Kevin Ritz, Mike Lansing, Terry Shumbert, Ben Petrick and from the 1993 team Andres “The Big Cat” Gallaraga. Many that I know of since living here in Denver a few I did not know about till this weekend. So the first day was an autograph session, interview session and Rockies open batting practice. I first went onto Galarragas line and he was with Kevin Ritz I had Galarraga sign my 1993 opening day from Shea photo and ball for me. I had Kevin Ritz cards which I forgot at home. Any body I did not have stuff for I got them to sign a card that they had at the table with the 20th Anniversary logo on it. While waiting on the line for The Big Cat one of the Rockies staffers asked a trivia question about the Rockies, the question was Besides Jason Jennings there were 3 other Rockies to win 10 games before the all-star break name 2 of the 3 For answering this question I won a pint of the Rockies 20 Anniversary Ale and a T- Shirt if you answer it I will give you something from this Roxivus weekend. There is a catch if you were on-line with me you are not eligible or if I talk to you about this! Because well you heard the answer. To answer the question Email me: firstname.lastname@example.org (there is a underscore between the Xand A) to answer this will remain open till August 1, when a winner will be pick from the people who get the answer correct. The prize will include Autographs!!!! I will announce winner on August 2nd. I will also announce what the prize will be in a later blog entry from later this weekend.
After the autograph session they had a Q&A session with all the players. They all were introduced and said what they have been up to since leaving the Rockies and Baseball. Many just spend time with the family while others have gotten into different business and careers.
Here are some photos of then:
The Big Cat being introduced.
Jason Jennings talking while Josh Fogg and Shawn Chacon look on.
A look at all the players on top of the dugout.
While the interview session was going on and the Rockies ended batting practice Dante throw to his son Bo and to one of Walt Weiss’ kids.
Bo in the cage taking some swings. They both hit well and Bo put a few over the wall in left field.
After Dante stopped and signed for a bunch of us he signed my 1993 throwback jersey of his that the Rockies wore against the Mets back in April. Above he is signing for Smitty.
A card for Jared.
and a bobble head for EB. It was very cool of him to stop and sign for us.
So that was it for ROIVUS!
The next day Friday the Rockies started the second half of the season against the Chicago Cubs and they continued the Roxivus festivity’s which mad for a busy day.
When I first got to the stadium I headed out for batting practice for a little while and then headed over to get some autographs. I first got onto Andres Galarragas line again and got a few of my cards signed since the day before I got a ball and Card signed. Then went to the area under the Rockpile where Pedro Astacio, Terry Shumpert and Brian Fuentes were. I had a few cards for Fuentes and got the 20th Anniversary cards signed. I then headed over to the third table by the playground where Josh Fogg, Shawn Chacon, Jason Jennings and Ben Petrick. I had Petrick’s book signed for a friend and had cards for Jason Jennings.
Shawn Chacon signing for Mike.
Shawn Chacon handing a ball back to a fan with Josh Fogg, Jason Jennings and Ben Petrick signing in the background.
Ben Petrick handing a ball back to a fan after signing also.
Troy Tulowitzki stepping to the plate in the 2nd inning.
After going to Andres Galarraga table again I headed back out to right field and got those guys again. I went out there because I did not get a Ben Petrick autograph the first time through I did got the 20th Anniversary cards signed by each of the guys out there.
While I was waiting online Dexter Fowler hit a solo home run to lead off the 4th inning for the Rockies it was his 1st homer in about 6 weeks. The score at this point was 1-1 the Cubs got a run in the 4th inning also on a solo home run theirs hit by Alfonso Soriano.
I was on-line with Josh the Mohawk guy! He was a really cool guy I have seen him around this season but never had met him before. Most of the conversation was about his Mohawk and what goes into getting it to look that way. Josh Fogg seemed amazed also. Josh and his Mohawk are also featured in this months Rockies magazine on page 11 and 12.
I finally settled into a seat at the beginning of the 4th inning so in the pursuit of autographs I missed over half the game.
Tulo was on base and here he is getting tagged out at home after a ball got passed the Cubs catcher Wellington Castillo, he then throw to pitcher Jeff Samardzija. This play ended the inning for the Rockies.
Jorge De La Rosa was the starting pitcher for the Rockies.
Jeff Samardzija started for the Cubs
Nolan Arenado throws to first to get Jeff Samardzija out in the 7th inning.
Edgmer Escolona came into pitch for the Rockies in the 7th inning. Jorge pitched real well only giving up the 1 run to the Cubs in the 4th and 5 hits in his 6 innings he pitched. Not to sure what is up with the new stance by Edgmer.
Cody Ransom making the turn at third to score on a Anthony Rizzo double in the 7th inning. (2-1) Cubs
To third when Rizzo tried to stretch the double to a triple.
He was out to end the inning.
Jeff Samardzija was taking out by manager Dale Sveum and was replaced by Pedro Strob.
Cole Gilespie scores the Cubs 3rd run of the game in the 9th inning for a 3-1 lead.
D.J. LeMahieu Hit a lead off double for the Rockies in the bottom of the 9th.
Running to first after the hit.
Tulo tosses a ball up to the crowd after a Cargo foul tip.
Cargo hits the ball
He was out on a throw from Cubs short stop Starling Castro.
Michael Cuddyer would hit into a double play getting Tulo out at second and himself at first. Tulo got on base on a walk. So in the inning there was 3 all-Stars batting after D.J. hit a lead off double and they could not get him home. That about says what is happening this season. After very good pitching performances they can not get runs and after someone gets on base they can’t get the run in this inning the Rockies had a very good opportunity to at least tie the game and ended up loosing it with the 3-1 score.
That was it for this game against the Cubs and day 2 of Roxivus.
So I was at Coors for the full series and will be there all week as the Rox play the Marlins and Brewers.
See You at Coors!
Nationals vs. Rockies
Think I finally got the correct amount of games this was my 36th game of the year! Yes have not missed a home game! So I have been off a few games on my count. That would be 38 including the Springs.
Jorge De La Rosa started for the Rockies He faced 3 batters in the 1st. Denard Span lined out to Helton at first. Jeff Kobernus hit a single he got caught stealing and Ryan Zimmerman struck out.
Ross Ohlendorf and his late 1800/early 1900 wind up started for the Nationals. He has a wind up that he swings both his arms before bring his hands above his head and than throwing the pitch.
Here are a few photos of his wind up.
It is a very different pitching motion these days for pitchers. Watching him pitch looked like something you would see in old grainy newsreels!
The Rockies only got 1 hit off of him 1 hit and only 2 base runners in the first 5 innings. Jonny Herrera got a single in the 1st and Nolan Arenado walked in the 5th.
The nationals took the lead in the 4th Ryan Zimmerman walked to start the inning and scored on a Ian Desmond single. Desmond would make the third out of the inning by being picked off between first and second. Yorvit Torrealba threw to Todd Helton at first to Herrera at second for the out.
The Rockies would get there run in 6th. Carlos Gonzalez hit a 20ut triple and scored Jonny Herrera. The Nationals did score 3 in the top half of the inning The Nationals lead was 4-1.
Jorge pitch till the 6th inning and Adam Ottavino came in to pitch. Jorge was responsible for 2 of the runs and Ottavino for 1. Chris Volstad came in and pitched the 8th inning for the Rockies he let up a run also. Volstad was called up from Colorado Springs earlier this day. room for him on the roster was made by the Release of fan favorite and great guy Eric Young Jr. it sucks that he was released but he has not been having that great of a season and others have been more productive of the bench. He had a few bad plays in the outfield and did not hit well as a pinch hitter this year. He was always really great with the fans and will be missed at Coors. Hope nothing but the best for him and hope he gets picked up soon.
Todd Helton runs to 1st after Jhonatan Solano dropped a third strike ball to end the game not much in this somewhat of a pitchers duel between the Rockies and Nationals. The Rockies had trouble getting batters on base in this O.K. start for Jorge. He did pitch well till the 6th and did strike out 5 Nationals. in his 5.1 innings. he gave up 3 runs and 4 hits. Not a bad start but the bats failed to give him run support. Stinks to see a good pitching out fall apart and he was not backed up by the offence. well that is it for this short post. Got another one in this series and the Phillies are at Coors this weekend.
See You at Coors!
My Road Trip starts next week!!!!
Stops include Boston!
Padres vs. Rockies
Sometime in the near future I have to figure out how many games this is for me this year! I am thinking 33 or so.
After being delayed in getting into the stadium on Thursday everything worked fine at the gate and I immediately headed to the pavilions. The Rockies were hitting and a few balls were hit out, with the group that was hitting when we arrived. Shortly after the second group started hitting. A few batters into the group we noticed that Rockies special assistant to the GM was taking batting practice. After a few go rounds he showed he still had it sending baseball into the seats of the Pavilions. So I watch where he was hitting and set my self up to snag this rarity and I guessed right and one of his last homeruns were hit directly to my waiting glove! It is always cool to catch a ball but that it was a hit by Vinny was even cooler.
Jorge De LA Rosa was the starting pitcher for the Rockies this game. After Chris Denorfia grounded out to Troy Tulowitzki, Evereth Cabrera hit a single to right field. During Chase Headleys at bat he would be caught stealing second base. Headley would go on and pop out to D.J. LeMahieu at second to end the inning for the Padres.
Dexter Fowler started the 1st off with a triple to his Padres doppelganger Cameron Maybin, his 2nd triple of the season. He would get tagged out between 3rd and home on a Eric Young Jr. bunt down the 3rd baseline.
Eric Young Jr. would advance to second on the play.
Tulo would hit a single to score EYJ and send Carlos Gonzalez who walked to get on base to second.
Tulo and Cargo scored on a ToddFather Todd Helton double, his 4th of the year and his 574th of his career. This now has him tied with HOF Charlie Gehringer on the all time doubles list at #20. 4 more to tie Wade Boggs at 19th all time. Todd is keeping some good company on his life time lists.
The Padres scored 2 in the 2nd inning on a Kyle Blanks 2 run home run scoring Jedd Gyorko. Gyorko got on base with a 1 out single. (3-2) Rox
The Rockies did not let the 1 run difference hold for long they went on a 2nd inning hitting spree started with a 1 out single by Jorge De La Rosa. Dexter Fowler hit a bunt single to move Jorge to 2nd. Jorge would get out on at third on a EYJ hit back to Padres pitcher Edison Volquez. Cargo hit a triple to right to score Dexter and EYJ. (5-2) Rox
Todd hit a single scoring Cargo from third.
Nolan Arenado hit a single scoring Tulo who was hit by a pitch before Todd hit his single. The above is a photo with Todd at third and Nolan on first while Volquez pitches to D.J. LeMahieu. D.J. would walk to fill the bases and Yorvit Torrealba would score Todd from third. that was 5 runs in the 2nd and a 8-2 lead for the Rockies.
D.J. LeMahieu at bat in the 2nd inning.
The Padres picked up 1 run in the 3rd. (8-3) Rockies
After Cargo hit his 2nd triple of the game scoring Dexter the Padres Bud Black took Volquez out of the game. Dex led the inning off with a single.
Tyson Ross would come into pitch for the Padres and get them out of the inning. He would pitch through the 5th inning.
Todd watches one go by during his at bat in the 3rd inning.
In the 4th inning Jared and I headed out to the pavilions to check out the Rock Social event. Took a few shots during the trip out there here is Ross squaring to bunt he would end up striking out on a bunt foul.
Todd grabbed the foul ball but Ross was already out.
Jorge pitch 5 innings for the Rockies I am not sure why they took him out I wasn’t fully paying attention after we got to the pavilions we met up with EB, James from 5280 Shirt Shop and a few others. I thought it may have been because of pitch count but now that I checked he was only at 88 pitches which is not that high for 5 innings and probably enough to go at least 1 more. The Padres did lessen the lead scoring one in the 5th the Rockies still had a 5 run lead. (9-4) Rox
Edgmer Escolona pitched the 6th inning for the Rockies Yasmani Grandal started the inning with a single but was left on base. Edgmer struck out the next 2 batters Will Venable and Chris Denorfia. Evereth Cabrera grounded out in the to D.J. LeMahieu at second to end the inning.
Rob Scahill would come out to pitch in the 7th. inning. I may have left Edgmer in after pitching well in the 6th. He threw 19 pitches in the 6th. Edgmer and Rob Scahill are both righties with Chase Headley who could switch hit, Jedd Gyorko and Carlos Quinton batting both righties. The inning started with Headley being hit bay a pitch followed by a Quentin hitting a home run followed by a Gyorko home run which quickly lessened the Rockies lead. (9-7) Rox.
Scahill was taken out of the game after allowing a single to Kyle Blanks who scored on a Cameron Maybin single.
Jonny Herrera came into the game to play left in a double switch that did not change places in the batting order.
The Padres did tie the game at 9 in the 7th inning. Wilton Lopez would finish the the 7th for the Rockies and Matt Belise pitched the 8th and 9th. Belise struck out 2 and did not allow a single runner.
Nolan Arenado was the first batter and last batter of the 9th for the Rockies, he hit a third pitch solo home run to end the game with the Rockies 10-9 win.
Nolan running the bases as the team runs from dugout and gathers at home.
Nolan approaching home.
and the pile up ensues!!!
The Rockies won this one in dramatic fashion with Air-enado sending one out, but it was a game that should of not really gotten a way from them this game was some what sealed with a good lead in the 6th. This is Coors and there really is no safe lead but it also their home field and this is the Padres who have been playing better lately, but I don’t fully agree with the switch in the 7th inning. Well with that this is it for this game 2 more against the Padres left in this series and it is now tied 1-1.
I was at both and as I try to catch up with the off day I will be posting more on the games against the Padres.

See You At Coors!
