Reds vs. Rockies
Today there was a double header The first game was the regularly scheduled Sunday afternoon game and the second was a make up from Saturday which was Postponed till a Sunday night. The reason was a water main break on Blake Street that provided the stadium with water on Saturday afternoon.
This being a Sunday it was an autograph Sunday today the signers were Tommy Kahnle , Brooks Brown, Jhoulys Chacin and Tyler Matzek. I was able to get Brooks on my 2014 Team project and Tyler Matzek on a 2012 California/Carolina League All Start game mini bat. That he and Christian Bergman both played in that game. I did get Christian on it earlier in the year. When the autographs were over it was time for the festivities to start for Todd Helton’s retirement ceremony. First the guest that were speaking were introduced Brad Hawpe and Matt Belilse. Drew Goodman from Root Sports MC’d the ceremony. Then Todd and his family were introduced on the field were his wife Kristy, their 2 daughters and I believe Kristy’s Parents and brother.
The first speaker was Brad Hawpe.
He spoke about playing with Todd and about his first big league spring training! Hawpe had always played 1st. base, but with Todd as the starting first baseman for years he had to change positions and how Todd in his dry humor way basically told him that! Over the years they became good friends which is why he was one of the speakers.
Todd and his youngest daughter Gentry Grace look on as the second speaker Matt Belilse speaks.
He spoke about how Todd helped him as a pitcher.
After Brad and Matt spoke it was tome for his older daughter Tierney Faith to speak she stole the show when she mentioned about dad being home a lot lately and if we would like him back!
I am keeping this brief because I know many have seen the speeches on T.V. or online.
The Montfort’s then presented Todd with a plaque of the 17, a replica of the one that is now hanging in the stadium.
They than unveiled the covered #17 that will be along with the Kelly McGreggor KSM and Jackie Robinson 42 . They are all above the visitors bullpen on the second level.
Todd than threw out the first pitch to former teammate Brad Hawpe.
Here they are after the pitch.
Todd gives a wave to the crowd.
Here he is before the National Anthem with the first pitch ball with the special #17 logo on it and with his daughter by his side.
After about the 1/2 hour ceremony it was time for the first game. I thought every involved did a great job with stories and there speaking about Todd. I thought him being presented a replica #17 from the Monforts was very cool. I did notice something that I thought was a little suspicious and that was our GM was not involved or on the field for this event. I just find it interesting that a teams GM would be MIA on such an important day in a teams history. Either he is already not involved or he doesn’t have a set of balls. I also find it odd that either Dick or Charlie Monfort did not speak either. I have never seen one of these and not sure if the owner would normally speak, so I will just leave it at that. Also somebody also mentioned that the Commissioner of baseball also was not at Coors and he usually does attend such events. Over all it was really great to be at Coors this day and have to thank the people who helped me with the location I was able to photograph from.
Now onto this interesting and action packed game!
Jordan Lyles was the starting pitcher for the Rockies. He sat the Reds down in order and threw 11 pitches in the inning. All 3 outs were ground outs and he kept the ball low in the strike zone.
Mat Latos was the starter for the Reds. He struck out Charlie Blackmon to start the inning. Drew Stubbs got things going with a double after that.
Stubbs’ double was followed with a Corey Dickerson double that scored Stubbs and gave the Rockies a 1-0 lead.
Dickerson’s double bounced around in the left field corner. Michael Cuddyer would come up next and grounded out for the second out of the inning.
Since the beginning of the game there was a slight rain but it just started to downpour during Cuddy’s at bat and there was thunder in the distance. They pulled the tarp with 2 outs and Dickerson on second. The delay lasted 21 minutes.
After the delay Arenado came to bat and scored a second run for the Rockies on a single that scored Dickerson and give the Rockies a 2-0 lead.
Lyles pitched well in the second and only had 1 base runner and that was a walk to Brayan Pena, he did record his first strike out of the game in the inning.
Blackmon came up in the 2nd inning with 2 outs and hit a solo home run and the Rockies had a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the 5th inning I was able to move to a better vantage point for photos and Lyles did allow his first hit of the game in the 4th that was a 2 run home run by Jay Bruce the second run was lead off batter Cozart who was hit with a pitch. The Rockies kept the lead 3-2.
Chris Heisey lead off the 5th inning by walking and Billy Hamilton came up with 1 out and hit a double advancing Heisey to third.
Heisey and Hamilton both scored on a Zach Cozart single. This gave the Reds a 4-3 lead.
Franklin Morales came in and pitched the 6th inning. The Reds immediately got to him and started off the inning with a Kris Negron solo home run, followed by a Skip Schumaker single and a Heisey double scored Negron and extended the Reds lead 6-3. Lyles pitched 5 innings giving up 5 runs on 5 hits walking 2 striking out 4.
Franklin Morales put down a bunt with Charlie Culberson on first. Culberson was forced out at second but Morales was safe at 1st.
The bottom of the 7th Dickerson lead off the inning with a home run into the fountain in center field. To cut the Reds lead down to 6-4.
Sam LeCure came into pitch for the Reds in the 6th and pitched into the 7th inning. After the Dickerson homer a single by Michael Cuddyer and Nolan Arenado, Jumbo Diaz came in to pitch for Reds.
With bases loaded Josh Rutledge came up an hit a sac fly to center that scored Cuddy from 3rd.
The run brought the Rockies within 1 run of the Reds still lead 6-5.
Juan Nicasio kept the Rockies in the game by holding the Reds off base in the 8th. He faced 3 batters and got out of the inning he did pitch deep in counts with 2 of the 3 batters throwing 7 pitches to Schumaker and 8 to pinch hitter jack Hannahan 18 in total in the inning. The only batter he didn’t throw many pitches to was heisey who grounded out on the 3rd pitch of a 1-1 count.
Jonathan Broxton pitched the 8th for the Reds giving up 1 single to Drew Stubbs and walked Dickerson. He did get out of the inning with a double play.
Rex Brothers pitched the 9th for the Rockies and The Reds immediately got on him, Hamilton started the inning with a double. Cozart did get out but the next 3 batters got on base either by hitting a single or being walked. One of those was a single by Bruce who scored Hamilton and extended the Reds lead to 7-5.
Hamilton sliding into second after his 9th inning hit. The Reds did score a 8th run and Brothers did get out of the inning after facing 8 batters and throwing 29 pitches in the inning.
Reds 100+ MPH closer Aroldis Chapman came into the game in the 9th. A closer like this is usually lights out, Not this game he walked 4 consecutive batters which gave the Rockies a run and the Reds now lead 9-6.
J. Hoover came in and pitched with base’s loaded and no outs he got the next 2 Rockies batters out and a run did score on a sac fly by Wilin Rosario. drew Stubbs came up with 2 out, 2 men on base and a Reds 2 run lead.
Stubbs hit a home run to left center field scoring the 3 runs the Rockies needed to win the game and the celebration started at home plate!
… and got the bucket!!!!
The Rockies won this game 10-9.
We then had to immediately leave the stadium so they could clean the stadium and do some field maintenance before the second game.
They basically had a half hour between games an had to clear the stadium and then get ready for the second game. The first game ended at about 6:30 and the gates for game 2 opened at 6:50 with a scheduled first pitch at 7:10.
by the time we grabbed some food and re-entered the stadium at 7:00 they were already doing the National Anthem for the second game. I headed down to where I normally sit for the first pitch and we were ready for the next 9 innings.
Yohan Flande started for the Rockies. He did not start as well as Lyles in the first game. He Gave up a double to Hamilton to start the game. Hamilton would scored when Jay Bruce hit into a fielders choice getting Ramon Santiago out at second. The Reds took a 1-0 lead in the first.
In the Bottom of the First Cuddy tried to get a 2 out rally going hitting a triple. He would remain on base when Nolan Arenado struck out.
Both Flande and Axelrod continued to pitch well giving up minimal hits and know runs till the bottom of the 5th. (When our at the bottom of your 5th)!
Brandon Barnes hit a lead off solo homer to get the Rockies on the board and tie the game at 1.
Walt Weiss removed Fande in the 6th inning after giving up a 2 run home run to the Reds Ryan Ludwick. Kris Negron hit a single and than scored on a Pena double. The Reds got a total of 3 runs in the inning and took a 4-1 lead.
When Flande was removed from the game Brookes Brown came in and pitched to the next 2 batters getting both batters out.
Brown remained in the game in the 7th and Hamilton got his 3rd hit of the game with 1 out. He than stole second base and the ball was thrown short to Rutledge who missed the ball on the bounce and it ended up in center field, Hamilton would reach third on the error. He would score and the Reds had a 5-2 lead.
The Rockies got thing going in the 7th Blackmon started the inning with a walk when he pinch hit in the pitchers spot.
Rutledge hit a single and Dickerson followed up with a single scouring Blackmon for the Rockies first run of the inning.
After the run the Reds still had a 5-3 lead.
Cuddyer hit a single in the 8th he now has a triple, home run and a single in this game.
The Rockies picked up 2 more runs on a Arenado hit that got Dickerson out at third but scored Rutledge, after a bad throw by the Reds 3rd baseman Santiago that scored Cuddy and Arenado ended up on third and the Rockies tied the game at 5.
Dickerson watches the ball after being out at third and coaches Cuddy who was coming down the line.
Cuddy sliding into home to tie the game!
Adam Ottavino came in in the 8th inning and shut down the Reds batters in the inning striking out 2 and Getting Pena to ground out for the third out. He pitched better in this inning then I have seen him pitch in a while. He got out of the inning with 9 pitches, pitching the most 4 pitches to Negron who struck out.
for the second game they invited back the rally guy from game 1 and he moved down to the lower level for the 8th inning. He was dancing in the upper deck during the first game 9th inning when the Rockies scored the 5 runs to come back and win that game. So by popular demand he was invited back by the Rockies for game 2!
With 2 outs and Brandon Barnes, Charlie Culberson and Josh Rutledge on base Dickerson hit a double. scoring Barnes and Culberson to give the Rockies a 7-5 lead.
Michael Cuddyer came to the plate and I noticed something on my score card and then confirmed it on the board. Cuddy only needed a double to complete the cycle. with a 1-1 count he hit a Manny Parra slider to left field.
He made the turn at 1st as the ball was still in the outfield.
he got the double and completed the cycle, this was his second of his career and he is only the 4th in MLB history to do it in both the American and National league.
Cuddy would slid into home once again for the Rockies 10th run of the game on a Drew Stubbs single. The Rockies had a 10-5 lead.
LaTroy Hawkins came into pitch the 9th and sat the Reds down in order to end the game and give the Rockies the sweep of the double header and 3 or the 4 games this weekend series.
The Rockies and Cuddy celebrate their second win of the day. This is more wins in one day they have gotten in some weeks lately. cuddy went 4 for 5 this game scoring 3 RBI’s and scoring 3 times. This was a great comeback day for him since this was the first day he played at Coors in almost 2 months. He went 5 for 10 on the day. He was also the 5th Rockies player to hit for the cycle.
it was time for the post season interview and the second bucket dump of the day!
He was warned to duck by the guys in the booth and Brandon Barnes got him pretty good!
These were 2 great games by the Rockies, it shows they do have potential to make things happen and it reminded me of the games they played early this season. The Bull Pen kept them in both games, they got pretty good starts from the starters and the bats where there when needed. A lot of guys stepped up this game. I wish they were able to do this for the last few months. These games would matter a lot more then a double header sweep or a series win.
It was an amazing day of baseball at Coors I am glad I was there for this day and to witness history twice this day, once with the retirement of the # 17 and then Cuddy hitting for the cycle. can not forget the 2 very dramatic games and wins in both.
So that is it for this one very long day at the ballpark.
White Sox Vs. Rockies
Game 3 of series
My 6th Game at Coors.
Today being a day game there was no batting practice, but it does mean an opportunity to get some autographs when the pitchers do there work out. I was able to get Brett Anderson and Adam Ottavino on my team project and an additional 8×10 of Anderson I took at spring training. Before the game I also had Charlie Blackmon sign a 8×10 of his head first dive into first on Sunday.
Juan Nicasio was the starting pitcher for the Rockies today this is his second start of the season coming of his home opener win on Friday. He started this game well with a ground ball out to second by Adam Eaton. Marcus Semien flew out to left for the second out and Jose Abreu hit a double but was left on base when Dayan Viciedo struck out to end the inning.
It was the Rockies turn to bat and 1st. base coach and former Rockies player Eric Young gave high fives to the fans in the first row as he has been doing before the bottom of the first all week. 21 Years ago today he hit a lead off homerun in the Rockies home game in Mile High Stadium in front of a record crowd for a baseball game 80227 fans. The Rockies won that game against the Expos 11-4. Bryn Smith was the winning pitcher and it was the 1st. win in franchise history.
Erik Johnson was the starting pitcher for the White Sox.
Charlie Blackmon started the game off like only he can with a triple to center field.
This was his first triple of the year to go along with his 16 hits 3 double and home run he has hit in the last week, can’t forget his 8 RBI’s and .471 batting average.
Blackmon would score on a Carlos Gonzalez single to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead.
Nicasio would have a rough inning in the second after getting Conor Gillespie to ground out. he then walked Jose Garcia and Alexi Ramirez hit a double.
Charlie Culberson dive after Alexi Ramirez’s double.
Trying to tag him out at second.
A Tyler Flowers single scored Garcia to tie the game at 1. The White Sox would take the lead 2-1 a few batter’s later when Ramirez scored on a Adam Eaton single.
In the second D.J. LeMahieu hit a single with 1 out and scored on a Charlie Blackmon single to tie the game at 2.
Blackmon and Eric Young at first after the game tying single.
Wilin Rosario take a big swing in the third for a fly out to right.
Carlos Gonzalez dives back to first after the Rosario out.
Cargo scored on a Nolan Arenado single to get the lead back 3-2.
The White Sox would once again take the lead in the 5th inning when Gillaspie hit a single scoring Eaton and Semien. The Rockies went down in order in the fifth. Matt Belisle pitched the 6th for the Rockies and worked very quick and efficiently. During one at bat he was throwing a pitch about every 10 seconds. He got a quick 3 outs all ground ball outs on 12 pitches.
Justin Morneau started the 6th with triple.
He scored on a D.J. LeMahieu double to right field.
On the play Avisail Garcia was hurt diving for the ball it looked like he caught it. But he must of lost control of the ball after hitting the ground it looked like he may have dislocated his shoulder and he was taken out of the game.
Adam Ottavino pitched the 7th for the Rockies and also had a very good inning siting down the White Sox in order on only 6 pitches including 3 to strike out Marcus Semien on 3 pitches.
The Rockies broke the tie in a big way here is Nolan Arenado scoring the second Rockies run in the 8th inning.
Stubbs (Came into game to pinch run for Morneau) and Arenado both scored on this D.J. LeMahieu double. Morneau lead the inning off with a single.
Josh Rutledge made his MLB debut for the year in the inning hitting a single to score D.J. He was called up today and Wilton Lopez was sent to Colorado Springs.
Michael Cuddyer slides into home after a Carlos Gonzalez double which he and Blackmon singled. Rutledge scored on a Cuddyer single. The Rockies took a 10-4 lead.
LaTroy Hawkins came in and pitched to 2 batters in the 9th.
Boone Logan made his Coors Debut pitching to the White Sox Paul Konerko.
Konerko grounded out to second to end the game.
The Rockies won this game 10-4 D.J. LeMahieu was the player of the game going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s Charlie Blackmon went 3 for 5 with 1 RBI.
Rex Brothers who pitched the last 2 outs in the 8th inning got the win.
That is it for the first home series of the year the Rockies went 4-2 on this home stand and have a 5-5 record heading to San Francisco and San Diego on this road trip and will be back next Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies.
That is it for this one it has been great to be back at Coors.
Thanks, Jared for the title Idea!
Chicago White Sox Vs. Colorado Rockies
Game 1 of Series my 4th game of the year.
Before the game and after Batting Practice I took my first trip up to the new Roof Top in the right field upper deck. It was cool it was a giant bar where seats use to be at a mile above sea level. That’s about all I got on that.
To more important things there is baseball in the stadium also!
Today in BP I got my first baseball of the year it was a catch and hit by someone on the White Sox.
Jordan Lyles was the starting pitcher for the Rockies he was called up when Tyler Chatwood went on the Disabled list with a slight hamstring pull. Chatwood will be doing a rehab start with the Sky Sox within a day or 2. He had a pretty quick inning facing 3 batters and throwing a efficient 11 pitch inning 7 were to the first batter of the game Adam Eaton who grounded out followed by a Marcas Siemien fly-out to centerfield. Jose Abreau grounded out to end the inning.
Ex-Rockie Felipe Paulino started for the White Sox. He pitched about as well for the White Sox as he did for the Rockies and well that was not to great!
After getting the National League player of the week Charlie Blackmon and 2013 NL batting Champ out Cargo hit a solo shot to put the Rockies on the board. He then walked Troy Tulowitzki. Justin Morneau ended the inning by grounding out.
Jordan Lyles pitched another very good inning in the 2nd. facing the minimum amount of batters and getting a strike out.
Lyles continued to pitch well in the third and allowed his first hit in the 4th inning a single by Marcus Semien. The Rockies score a third run in the third.
Paulino was taken out of the game by White Sox manager Robin Ventura after scored another run and the loaded the base’s. The Rockies would score 3 runs in the inning to give them 6-0.
Walt Weiss would take Lyles out of the game after 7th after the White Sox scored a run and he walking Tyler Flowers. The funny thing is one batter before Walt came out and just talked to Lyles and adam Ottavino started heading in from the bullpen. Walt then walked off the mound and Ottavino went back to the bullpen! He left the game throwing 102 pitches, giving up 1 run on 4 hits. Striking out 4 and walking 2. He also went 3-3 at the plate with that double in the second and a single in the 4th and 5th. He also had 2 RBI’s so he hit 1 less hit than he gave up and scored twice as much as the White Sox. I would say that was a good outing for him.
The Rockies would score an additional run on a Troy Tulowitzki solo home run his first of the year. To get the fans tacos and his home run count up. Now still trying to figure out where his homers are when we have runners on and we are down but hey I will take it!
After Michael Cuddyer lead off the 8th with a double he would score on a error hit by Justin Morneau to Semien at second base.
The Rockies would win this one with great Pitching by Jordan Lyles and by taking advantage of runners on base and a bad start by Paulino.
Lyles is now 2-0 on the season not bad as coming up for an injury. Interesting to see what the move will be when Chatwood is reactivated.
On the Charlie Blackmon watch he went 0-5 this game and is now batting .464.
Got 2 more at Home against the White Sox and I will be there.
See You at Coors!
Diamondbacks Vs. Rockies
Game 3 of series and of the year!
This being a Sunday there was no bating practice so I still have not gotten a baseball this year! It was the first autograph Sunday of the year and the signers where Chad Bettis, Jordan Lyles, Tyler Chatwood and Charlie Culberson. I got Jordan Lyle on both of my team projects the 16 x 20 and the Spring training magazine. Later at the wall I got Chad Bettis in the magazine as well. So making some progress with the 2 projects.
Today Brett Anderson started for the Rockies this was his second start of the season and first at Coors.
He started out well getting the first 2 batters out in the inning he threw 3 pitches between them. Then Paul Goldschmidt hit a single followed by a Martn Prado double, Mark Trumbo was walked to load the bases and Anderson struck out Miguel Montero to end the inning and work himself out of the situation.
The above photo was the first out of the inning A.J. Pollack grounded out to Arenado who tossed to Cuddy at first.
Wade Miley was the starting pitcher for the Diamondbacks.
Charley (Chuck Nasty) Blackmon started the game off like he has all weekend and that was with a single that he was originally called out and Walt went for the challenge in the first at bat of the game.
Blackmon standing on 1st as the play is reviewed by umpires. The call was overturned and was ruled a single. That was the first review of a play in Coors Field.
He would then be out at second when Michael Cuddyer hit to the D’backs short stop Chris Owings.
The D’backs started getting some runs in the third inning. A.J Pollach started the rally with a lead off single and that was followed by a Aaron Hill single and both scored on a Paul Goldschmidt hit to third that was and error on Arenado and the ball headed to left field. Goldschmidt ended up on second. (2-0) D’backs
The D’backs scored 1 more in the 4th when Wade Miley contributed with a single scoring Owings and 2 in the 5th on a Mark Trumbo home run. This was his 4th consecutive game hitting a homer and his 5th of the year.
The Rockies scored again in the 7th, scored by Troy Tulowitzki on a Nolan Arenado sac-fly to center. They got a third in the 9th (5-3) D’backs
Cargo scored the run. Above he stole second and the ball headed into center field and he would head to third and scored when Rosario would hit into a double play getting Tulo out at second and himself at first. After Arenado flew out the game ended and the 3 runs was not enough to sweep the Diamondbacks this Opening Weekend.
The Rockies will have their first interleague series of the year against the White Sox Monday-Wednesday.
See You at Coors!
Diamondbacks vs. Rockies
Game 2 of series.
Arrived a little late so did not go to batting practice today. Did go down to get autographs right after gates opened and did not get any Charlie Blackmon, Corey Dickerson, Nolan Arenado, Charlie Culberson and Chad Bettis all signed to day I did not get any autos the only person I had a chance to get was Blackmon but did not have anything for him. The rest signed for awhile but did not make it to where I was.
Jorge De La Rosa was the starting pitcher for the Rockies and made the game interesting kind of quick. After striking out the first 2 batters you would think he has this…. Then he walked Paul Goldschmidt followed by Martin Prado hitting a double to score Goldschmidt.
The Diamondbacks scored 1 run in the inning. Jorge also walked Mark Trumbo in the inning. He did end the inning with a strike out but he did allow the 1 run and throw 42 pitches in the inning 13 to the first 2 batters and 10 to Miguel Montero before striking him out to end the inning.
Charlie Blackmon lead off the inning with his 7th consecutive hit in this series and is now 7 for 7 at home this year.
Jorge pitching did not improve in the 2nd but he did throw less pitches (19) and the D’backs did get a second run. The implosion continued in the 3rd inning when he gave up 2 more runs and threw 18 pitches for a 3 inning total of a lot! I mean 79 pitches. Which is horrendous on Avg. most pitches get out of inning with 15 or so.
After getting it together in the 4th he only threw 13 pitches and sat the D’backs batter down in order and did not give up another run. But he was now over a 100 pitches after 4. He was removed with 1 out in the 5th after walking Goldschmidt for the second time this game. He threw 101 pitches in les than 5 innings.
The Rockies did get on the bord in the 4th with 3 runs 2 on a Michael Cuddyer home run with Carlos Gonzalez on base and the third on Nolan Arenado’s solo home run 2 batters later. (4-2) D’backs
Tommy Kahnle came into pitch for the Rockies in the 5th and retired the 2 batters he faced in the inning. He did continue to pitch the 6th inning and very well only giving up 1 hit to Gerrado Parra.
The Rockies did get it going again in the 5th at the plate and scored 2 to take the lead 5-4. After Kahnle batted for himself and got out, who else but Charlie Blackmon lead the charge. with a single and scored on a D.J. Lemahieu single.
D.J. would then score on a Cargo single (5-4) Rox
Most importantly Cuddy got the call right in the on deck circle!!!
Nolan Arenado added an additional run with a second homerun in the 6th. (6-4) Rox
The D’backs Ryan Rowland-Smith pitched the 7th inning. Brandon Barnes who pinched hit for the pitchers spot is on third with Charlie Blackmon on first. (I use pitched lightly considering most of his throws in the inning was to Goldschmidt at first It was close to eight throws to first in the inning) Barnes would eventually score and the Rockies lead would increase to 7-4.
The play that Barnes scored on was a ball hit deep to right by D.J. LeMahieu which looked like it was going to get out but was caught Charly Blackmon was about 1/3 of the way between 2nd and 3rd when the ball was caught and tried to beat the ball back to first, he did not quite make it back and was doubled up. Can’t complain since he was 8 for 9 in the last 2 games at this point.
Justin Morneau crossed the plate for the 8th Rockies run of the game in the 8th inning on a Arenado double. So Arenado was 3 for 4 tonight with 2 homers, a double and 3 RBI’s
LaTroy Hawkins came in for the close in the 9th.
With 2 outs A.J. Pollack hit a ball to Arenado at 3rd…
…he than threw across the field to Morneau at first….
..which bounced and…
.. got away from Morneau. Pollack got and base.
LaTroy was able to get Aaron Hill to fly out to left to end the game and the Rockies won 9-4. Nice start to the home season. The Rockies are still 3-3 on the year. Today if they sweep the D’backs they will be a over .500 team for the first time since mid last season!Nolan Arenado who was the player of the game high-five manager Walt Weiss after the win!
Also Tommy Kahnle got the win which was his first in the Majors Congratulations to him for getting the game back in control and his first win.
That is it for this one.
See You at Coors.
Arizona Diamondbacks Vs. Colorado Rockies
Coors Field, Game 1 of 2014
This was my 5th Coors Field Opening Day. I like almost all of them and many other days during the season I arrived at 20th and Blake real early. This year I did not go to breakfast like many other years I just walked around Lodo, as always I did meet up with friends as the day progressed. I first met up with Carlos and Mrs. Los, then John, Rockpile Ranter and Hunter, Douglas, Gary X, EB, Smitty and Cass.
Here is X and Mrs. Los doing a running man while Carlos looks all tough and hey John nice sox!
So I noticed some new additions to the stadium and that was Banners with milestones on them around the stadium these show Don Baylor and Jim Tracy’s Manager of the years. The photo 2 photo’s above is of National League batting titles these 2 banners are of Larry Walkers in 1998 and Carlos Gonzalez’s in 2010.
After having fun out and about Lodo it was time to head into Coors Field. They had some new additions inside as well.
They had some more things hangin over the concourse with other first and milestones from the last 21 years of Rockies history. the above and next 2 photos show a few of these set ups.
After I went to batting Practice for a round or 2 of the Diamondbacks, it was time for the beginning of the Opening Day festivities on the field. (Did not get any baseballs during BP)
The player introductions. above is one of the newest Rockies Justin Morneau high-fiving down the line of starters in this photo with former Twin’s teammate Michael Cuddyer.
The players right before the National Anthem.
They had the giant flag out on the field here is a photo of before it being spread out.
Then it was time to hand out the hardware, Carlos Gonzales and Nolan Arenado’s gold gloves. Just realized they did not do anything for Cuddy’s batting title. Maybe sometime during the weekend.
Dinger added a few moves to his regiment he also busted out a cart wheel later on!
Members of the Denver Philharmonic played the National Anthem and the new Rockies themes song.
The Rockies take the field for the first time at Coors in 2014. Lead by starting pitcher Juan Nicasio.
Juan Nicasio throwing the first pitch to the D’backs Gerardo Parra. Parra grounded out followed by a Aaron Hill strike out, the third batter of the inning Paul Goldschmidt walked and Martin Prado flew out to Michael Cuddyer in right field to end the inning Nicasio threw 16 pitches in the inning.
Randall Delgado was the starter for the D’backs.
Charley (Chuck Nazty) Blackmon started his assault on the D’backs quickly with a double on the third pitch of the game from Delgado. He scored on a Cuddyer single to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead in the 1st. Cuddy would be throw out at second a ground ball hit by Carlos Gonzalez who was doubled up on at first base. Cargo seemed to get out of the batters box a little slow (think he may of been safe if it wasn’t for that) Just saying. Troy Tulowitzki ended the inning by grounded out.
Charlie Blackmon scouring the Rockie first Coors Field run of 2014.
After Nicasio got the job done in the second sitting the D’backs down in order throwing 15 pitches to the D’backs, Justin Morneua came up for his first at bat. Here he is taking a pitch for a ball during his at bat that he would eventually walk. The Rockies did not score in the second inning.
In the third inning look who scored once again, Charlis Blackmon touches home while Cuddy turns at third after a Cargo triple.
Cuddy crosses the plate as Cargo slides into third.
Juan Nicasio pitch another terrific inning in the 3rd. striking out 2 D’backs and getting out of the inning on 11 pitches. He worked this game real efficiently and kept his pitch count low which seemed to be a problem for him last year. This is why I was mentioning his pitch count after innings. He really seems to be really confident on the mound. The first D’backs run was on a Prado single in the 4th he got out of this inning throwing only 13 pitches for a total of 54 pitches in the game. Last year he probably would have been at about 75 plus pitches and close to being removed from the game.
If Blackmon wasn’t doing enough damage to the D’backs he hit a 2 run home run in the 4th to give the Rockies a 6-0 lead. That is 3 for 3 with a Double, Single and a home run. The D’backs would get a run in the 5th inning on a Mark Trumbo lead off home run. (6-1) Rox
Delgado was removed after walking Tulo and giving up a single to Morneau in the 5th. inning. He gave up 10 hits 6 runs, walked 2 and struck out 3.
Blackmon hit his second double of the game to lead off the 6th inning. He did get caught stealing third base in the inning. Cargo would then only be able to score 2 runs when he hit his home run of the rail in the third deck almost hitting the new Coors Rooftop. (8-1) Rox
Brandon Barnes would make his first appearance at Coors after coming over from the Astros in the Dexter Fowler trade. he made a pretty good first impression with his 2 out triple in the 7th inning. Pinch hitting for Nicasio. Nicasio came out of the game with one of his best starts I have seen from him in a few years. giving up 1 run and only 4 hits, striking out 6 in his 7 innings pitched. The Rockies would go on scored 2 more runs in the inning to give them a 10-1 lead. Barnes scored on a Charlie Blackmon single for his 2nd RBI of the game. He also scored and it ws his 4th time around the bases on the day.
Brandon Barnes making the turn at second heading to third for his 7th inning triple.
Chad Bettis pitched the 8th inning for the Rockies and let up a run the Rockies had a 10-2 lead after the inning. He throw 24 pitches to the 6 D’backs batters he faced.
Charlie Blackmon did not let us down with his 8th inning at bat. He hit his third double of the game scoring 2 more runs for his 4th and 5th RBI of the day. So he hit 3 doubles, 2 single and a home run for a total of 6 hits, 5 RBI’s and he scored 4 times. He was involved in 9 of the Rockies 12 runs in the game. This was also only the second time a Rockie has gone 6 for 6 and the 66th time in MLB history. The first Rockie to do it was Andres Gallarager.
Wilton Lopez pitched the 9th for the Rockies Mark Trumbo lead off the inning with a single, A.J. Pollack would also single but both would remain and base as Parra ground back to Lopez and he would toss to Morneau at first for the final out of the game. The Rockies for the 13th time in their history would win there home opener 12-2.
The Rockies got to shake hands for only the second time of the season. Since they lost 3 out of the 4 against Miami earlier in the week. Things do seem to be looking up for this team especially with Charlie Blackmon leading off and playing center field. Juan Nicasio helped with his incredible pitching performance, which I am sure the run support helped.
That is it for this one 80 more to go here at Coors and 156 left in the season.
the Rockies have 2 more against the D’backs at Coors and 3 against the Chicago White Sox on this home stand.
Also hopefully I will be able see the new Roof Top sometime this weekend. Did not make it up there this game.
See you there!
Remember you can follow me on twitter @roxaddict. That is when the cell phone is working at Coors. Even with improvements of the cell antennas in the stadium it was still not performing well during the game with the crowd hopefully it will work better when the crowd is a little thinner.
Mariners Vs. Rockies
Salt River Fields At Talking Stick
The Day started early at Tempe Diablo.
We went just for autographs trying to get Albert Pujols, Mike Trout and Josh Hamilton. After a few hours we ended up getting no one. The Angels since they were not playing at Tempe Diablo today had a open to the public batting practice inside the stadium. The Rockies had a split squad day the first game was in Scottsdale against the Giants and they lost 4-0. We did not go to the game.
After a break in the mid afternoon we headed to Salt River Fields for the Rockies game against the Mariners. One of y main priorities was to get a Howard Johnson autograph. Above he is talking to Andy Van Slyke. I have gotten Howard before in the Spring but I have a lot of cards of him. I did not get him but I did get Van Slyke. Which was the only autograph I had gotten today.
For the second time this trip the first being Mondays game Franklin Morales started for the Rockies. After the first 2 Mariners batters ground out Stefen Romero hit a solo home run to give the Mariners a 1 run lead.
D.J. LeMahieu throws to Michael Cuddyer at first base for the second out of the first inning The Mariners Kyle Seager.
Felix Hernandez was the Starting pitcher for the Mariners. He was lights out in the first inning throwing only 7 pitches and striking out Charlie Blackmon and Ryan Wheeler both on 3 pitches, all swinging strikes. Brandon Barnes who was the second out of the inning was a first pitch ground out.
A look from home plate with the full moon over right field.
Michael Cuddyer taking a lead off first base after leading off the inning with a single.
The Mariners would game the lead back in the 2nd inning after Brad Miller started the inning for the Mariners with a triple. He scored on a Abraham Almonte sac fly to center giving the Mariners a 2-1 lead.
Michael Cuddyer trying to leg one out to avoid the double play in the 4th inning. It was a close one but he was called out. He gives it his all every time he runs down that line. A huge amount of hustle from him wish more of his teammates played the way he does.
La Troy Hawkins came into pitch for the Rockies in the 5th inning.
After loading up the bases the Rockies would get out of the inning starting with a beautifully executed 5,2,3 double play. A ball hit to third, thrown home for the first out and than to first for the second. Love none conventional plays like that, most importantly it saved the run and pretty much the inning for the Rockies.
The creative BNW to show off the mad photo skillz. Now back to the game!
Rex Brothers pitched the 6th inning for the Rockies.
Charlie Blackmon at the plate with D.J.Lemahieu on second in the 6th inning. D.J. would be left on base. I have seen him lead off the inning with a extra base hit and get stranded way to many times last season. I think he should do well batting in the lead off spot if everyone can hit behind him. I saw this a lot last year when he would either start the inning in whatever part of the order he was in or when he would pinch hit to lead off an inning for the pitchers spot or a infield substitution. So he did not score and the game remained the same 2-1 Mariners.
Mom, Tara and EB (E2themnfnB) as he was called in his gansta days!
Leuris Gomez warming up in the bullpen. He would pitch later in the game.
Charlie Blackmon would hit a sac fly in the 8th with Charlie Culberson on third and tied the game at 2.
Culberson crosses the plate for the Rockies second run of the game.
Kent Mathis trying to steal second after his 9th inning single.
Notice I sad tried! He was caught and called out!
After the Rockies failed to score in the bottom of the 9th it was time for free baseball. Leuris Gomez pitched the 10th for the Rockies only facing 3 batters. He did allow a hit but the runner was caught stealing to end the inning.
The Rockies came up in the 10th and tried to start a 2 out rally after a Ryan Wheeler walk. Kyle parker would hit a single, followed by a Tim Wheeler being hit by a pitch to load the base’s Kent Mathis would struck out to end the game and this being Spring Training the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
This is the group of the Cool kids who were here for this game!
That is it for this one, Only one more game left for me from spring training That is also at Salt River Fields and it is against the Angels.
See you there.
