2014 Triple A Home Run Derby.

Triple A Home Run Derby

Durham Bulls Athletic Park

Durham, North Carolina

I left Denver about 9:30 A.M. MDT on Sunday and arrived in Raleigh at 5:30 P.M. EDT. So After 31 hours in the Truck I stopped at my relatives house showered and headed to Durham Bulls Athletics Park for the triple a home run derby. This was the 4th time I have been to the DBAP. I have been there 3 times for Durham Bulls games. we Arrived just in time for the start of the Derby around 7:15.

The above photo is the front of the stadium, which is a lot more open then it use to be. They remodel parts of the stadium last winter including moving the front gates of the stadium adding a bleacher section on the first base side, A large LED Board on the Blue Monster, LED board along the right field fence, resurfaced the field and changed the drainage system under the field.

This is a look at the front of the stadium from 2011.

There were many promotion around hitting the Bull during the home run derby. One was the first hit everyone would win a steak taco from Moe’s South West grill. The next 14 times the Bull would get hit a fan would win $100.00 If it was hit 15 times 1 fane would win $15,000 lets just there was no money one. The Bull was only hit once during the home run derby.

One thing that each participant was able to do was after the 7th  out they were able to use a composite bat for ass long as they did not get the 8th out.

There were 6 players in the home run derby the first was Francisco Pena who plays for the Omaha StormChasers. He hit 5 homers in the 1st. round.

Next up was from the Indianapolis Indians Matt Hague he hit 2 in the 1st. round.

Las Vegas 51’s Allan Dykstra was the third up. As he was batting I headed towards the out field to see if I could snag a ball. he hit 3 in the round.

Next up was Jesus Aguilar from the Columbus Clippers. he hit 3 homers in the first round.

Former Sky Sox player Mike Jacobs, now with the Reno Ace’s did not hit any homers.

IMG_0646Like in the MLB Home Run Derby little leaguers get to catch the baseballs in the out field.

The 6th guy was Mikie Mahtook from the Durham Bulls who was a late add and replaced Mike Hessman from the Toledo Mudhens.

4 of the 6 returned to the second round and I returned to my seat. Pena, Hague, Dykstra and Aguilar competed in the second round.

Pena added 3 to his total for 8 homer in the 2 rounds.

Hague added 2 to his total for 6 home runs.

Dykstra added 3 for a total of 7 and Aguilar 3 for a total of 6. Pena and Dykstra advanced to the finals.

Clay Council, who pitched to Josh Hamilton in Josh Hamilton in the 2008 MLB Home Run Derby in Yankee Stadium. That was when Hamilton hit 28 home runs in a single round.

Clay Council throwing to Francisco Pena in the final round.

Pena did not hit a homer in the final round.

So Dykstra only needed to hit 1 and he did to win.

The 2014 triple A Home Run Derby Champ Allan Dykstra displays his Championship belt.

That was it for the Triple A Home Run Derby. it was pretty cool to be able to see this event and I will be at the Triple A All-Start Game Tonight.

After The All-Star game I will be heading to Winston-Salem and Greensboro.

The Sky Sox in the Red against the Birds.

Memphis Redbirds Vs. Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Memphis Redbirds are a triple A  Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinal

This game was also one of the games that Jason Giambi did his rehab assignment in the Springs. He has been on the disabled list with a strained left quadricep muscle.

He came out early being one of the first players to get on the field he immediately started signing autographs.

Here he is signing autos. He signed from about 20 minutes before the game til almost first pitch.

Another photo as he continued to sign for the Colorado Spring fans. He signed a card a Rockies magazine and 2 mini Helmets for me.

He was not in the starting line up in this nights game. He was used as a pinch hitter in the game.

Clayton Mortensen throws the first pitch to the Redbirds Adron ChambersWho would strike out for the first out of the inning. Mortensen would allow 2 walks, a single and 1 strike out to the next 4 batters. Andrew Brown was the 6 batter to step to the plate in the first and hit a grand slam HR. (4-0) Redbirds.

Browns Redbirds teammates greet him with high fives as he crosses home plate.

The next batter would fly out to end the inning.

The Sky Sox would not produce a run till the 4th by that time the were already down 7-1.

Mortensen would be taken out in the 5th. Blake Johnson would be brought into the game. (Not to be confused with Alan Johnson or Andrew Johnston)

Stu Coles hands the ball to Blake Johnson in the 5th Inning.

In the bottom of the 5th inning the unfamiliar # 51 came out of the dugout to bat in the pitchers spot. Well unfamiliar as # 51 and in a Sky Sox uniform.

Jason Giambi #51 batting in the 5th inning for the Sky Sox.

The Sky Sox did not score any runs in the 5th. They would get 2 in the 6th. (7-3) Redbirds

Alan Johnson would then pitch in the 6th inning for the Sky Sox.

The Redbirds would score 1 in the7th. (8-3) Redbirds

The Sky Sox would pick up one run in the 7th and then 2 in the 9th. (10-4) Redbirds

10-4 but it wasn’t over an out quite yet for the Sky Sox, Matt Macri would hit a lead off solo HR in the 9th. (10-5) Redbirds

Macri steps on home for the Sky Sox 5th run. (5-10).That was the final score.

Oh and Giambi’s at bat in the 5th he struck out!

The Rockies return to Coors Monday @ Coors against the Marlins see ya then.
