Brewers vs. Rockies
So today I tried something a little different instead of rushing to the stadium to be there for 4 O’clock when the gates opened I left my house about 4:10 and got into the stadium about 4:45. I missed the Rockies BP and the Brewers were hitting when I got into Coors. With in about 10 minutes of being there I got a BP baseball. Not bad for slacking and showing up 45 minutes late! Not that this will start a new trend of showing up late, it just shows sometimes I don’t have to put in as much time to get a ball.
Today was the Rockies debut of Colin McHugh he was the pitcher we had gotten from the Mets for Eric Young Jr. McHugh has been in the majors before with not much success, His best game was last Aug. in his MLB debut against the Rockies at Citifield in NY. He has been pitching well in Triple A Las Vegas this year with a 3-2 record. After being traded the Rockies optioned him to Double A Tulsa. He was brought up to see if he could fill the Rockies available starting spot. which has been kind of revolving door this season for the Rockies.
Before warm ups Todd Helton stopped and signed a few autographs. As usual when he signs it was a mob of people rushing over to where he was. I came close to getting one this time but did not. I do have a few cards for him to sign but nothing that is important to finishing team sets or anything.
Here is Colin McHugh throwing his first pitch to Rickie Weeks. It was a fastball for a called strike. Not a bad start but that did not last long the second pitch was a ball and the third was a hit to left field resulting into a double and later a run. weeks advanced to third on a Norichika Aoki sac-bunt and scored on a Jean Segura single. Jonathan Lucroy hit another double for the Brewers 2 batters later and that put Segura on 3rd., he would than score on a Carlos Gomez sac-fly to right. Lucroy scored on a Caleb Gindl double for a 3-0 Brewers lead.
Segura diving back to first after his single.
Here is Segura sliding at home for the Brewers second run.
Jim Wright visiting the Mound in the first inning.
The Rockies hitter did not do much in the first against the Brewers starting pitcher Tom Gorzelanny. Dexter Fowler flew out to right to start the inning and then D.J. LeMahieu and Troy Tulowitzki both struck out.
Tulo discussing the called strike with home plate umpire Dana Demuth.
McHugh settled down a little in the 4th only facing 3 batters, he did get a slightly inside on Jean Segura who got hit by a pitch but did not get the base because it was during a swing for a strike.
The Rockies tried to get the game back in the 6th. here is D.J. LeMahieu sliding into home for the first Rockies run of the game on a Tulo single.
The Brewers would get a 7th run in the 7th. a solo home run by Lucroy off Adam Ottavino. Ottavino came in to pitch in the 6th inning. McHugh went 5 full innings giving up 6 runs on 9 hits walking 1 and striking out 2. Ottavino pitched the 6th and 7th the only hit he allowed was the home run to Lucroy.
Corey Dickerson pinch hit for the pitcher in the 7th. He hit a single with one out.
Dexter Fowler reached also in the 7th on an error by first baseman Francisco. He would get out after LeMahieu hit into a double play to end the inning. The Brewers manager did come out to argue the call with first base umpire Cory Blaser.
The Rockies did get a run in the 8th. another one of those To Little to late solo home runs to lead off the inning by Tulo. Glad to see him hitting but where are these home runs with runners on when we are down by 3.
Jim Henderson pitching for the brewers in the 9th inning. he was the Brewers 4th pitcher of the night. Their starter Gorzelanny went 6 innings and was responsible for 4 of the Rockies runs. Henderson would strike out both Nolan Arenado and Charlie Blackmon.
Jonny Herrera came into pinch hit for the pitchers spot but flew out to right to end the game. So the Rockies let this one get away with a bad pitching attempted by McHugh and lack of runs support even know they did score 5. The final was 7-5 and that was it for game to against the Brew Crew.
Still playing catch up with the last home series. While I am writing this the Rockies are getting ready for game 2 against the Pirates in Pittsburgh. After the very bad series in Atlanta they did get the first game against the Pirates who have been real hot lately lets hope they can cool them down this week since they have to face them back at Coors next week.
I would also like to thank everone who follows the Rox Addict blog once again I made the top 50 at #42 for the month of July.
Till then I will see you at Coors.
Also remember you still have time to answer the Roxivus trivia Question just email me the answer email@example.com
You can find the question in this link: http://roxaddict.mlblogs.com/2013/07/23/roxivus-whatever-that-means-and-game-one-of-the-cubs-series/
I am going to have the winner pick the prize there are a few autographs and some 20th anniversary items up for grabs.
Cubs vs. Rockies
need to figure out how many game I have been to at Coors and in total for the year!
Before the game there was a street fair on Blake street it had a few things for the kids, a Live band playing at the corner of 22st and Blake.
Also on the corner of 21st and Blake Kyle Bannister was doing a chalk art piece on the side-walk. Kyle does a lot of baseball related art you can see more of his work if you search engine his name in almost all search engines.
Here is the creative BNW taken from Coors Field toward 21st. St.
Once again I got directly on-line for autographs first the Line with Andres Galarraga, Mike Lansing and Kevin Ritz. Again I went to the center field line and back to Galarragas again. This time I had him sign a Lefty batting helmet that I bought at the Coors garage sale on Thursday and a Rockies magazine that I found that morning that he was on from 1994. Once again I missed a few innings of the game but I have seen over 50 games I only had 3 to get all the thing I would have liked signed and if they did this for the next month I think I would still have cards and other stuff for him to sign. I think I have maybe 15-20 more cards from the early 90’s and other collectible Rockies stuff he could sign. As for everyone else I pretty much ran out of cards for them to sign.
Juan Nicasio was the starting pitcher for the Rockies this game. It was the 3rd inning when I took this photo the Cubs were up 1-0 and Starling Castro was at the plate. The Cubs run was scored on a home run by Luis Valbuena before this at bat.
The starting pitcher for the Cubs was Carlos Villanueva. He would walk 2 in the 3rd inning and the Rockies did not score off this opportunity.
Troy Tulowitzki hit the ball back to Villanueva with Dexter Fowler on 2nd and Carlos Gonzalez on first, he would hit the ball back to Villanueva who threw to Cubs second base man Darwin Barney who threw over to first for the double play once again a missed opportunity for the Rockies to score.
Castro throwing to first.
Tulo out at first to end the inning.
During the bottom of the 4th. the wind picked up and trash started blowing out of the stands on onto the field.
It all ended up in right field just circling Nate Schieholtz.
There was quite a bit of it!
Carlos Villanueva pitching in the 4th inning.
The Rox would get things going in the 4th inning. Wilin Rosario would hit a double with 1 out and Todd Helton on base, Helton would end up on third.
Nate Schierholtz misplaced Rosario’s hit to right field.
Rosario safe at second base after his double.
Nolan Arenado would ground out to first but Helton would score a run to tie the game at 1.
Juan Nicasio would walk and Dexter Fowler would hit his 3rd triple of the season scoring Rosario and Nicasio. Above Nicasio is crossing the plate. The Rockies would take a 3-1 lead.
Between the 4th and 5th inning the grounds crew and security would run out and pick up all the trash on the field.
the Rockies continued to score runs in the 5th inning. Carlos Gonzalez started it off with his 26th home run of the season to score another run 4-1 Rockies.
Helton hit a single scoring Tulo. 5-1 Rox.
Cubs manager Dale Sveum took Villanueva out of the game. Michael Bowden came into pitch for the Cubs.
Things did not get better for the Cubs the first batter Bowden faced was Rosario who hit a single scoring Michael Cuddyer. (6-1) Rox
Charlie Blackmon came in a pinched hit for Nicasio in the inning and he walked in the inning. The Rockies would get a 4th run in the inning on a Dexter Fowler sac fly to left scoring Helton from third. (7-1) Rox
Starling Castro grounded out to Tulo at short to start the 6th inning for the Rockies. The Cubs would get a run in the 6th. After the Castro out Anthony Rizzo would hit a single and then score on a Alfonso Soriano double (7-2) Rox
Adam Ottavino pitched in the 6th inning for the Rockies and was taken out after allowing a hit in to the Cubs Darwin Barney and then walking Welington Castillo in the 7th Wilin Lopez came in for the Rockies. Barney would score later in the inning on a Luis Valbuena single. (7-3) Rox
D.J. LeMahieu hit a single in the 8th inning and was awarded on an interference by Starling Castro on a pick off play advancing him to second. Tulo hit a double with D.J. and Dex on base to add 2 additional runs on the Rockies total (9-3) Rox
Dexter Fowler not scoring I forgot why he was called back after this play. I think it may have been a foul ball or something. Just left it in because of the action in the photo. As I mentioned before he did score on a Tulo double.
Tulo hitting the 2 run double.
With a comfortable lead the Rockies brought in Mitchell Boggs who we recently got from the Cardinals organization for Parker Frazier who has been in Tulsa. Boggs was recently demoted from the Cardinals to there double A team. So I guess that screams opportunity for Rockies. I hope this pans out for the team.
The first batter he faced Junior Lake grounded out. Darwin Barney then hit a double.
Here he is pitching in the 9th inning.
Darwin Barney’s ball going down the third base line for his double. Boggs did get out of the inning striking out pinch hitter Cody Ransom, walking Valbuena Castro would end the game hitting to Tulo and he would toss to D.J. LeMahieu to get Valbuena out at second the Rockies took this one 9-3 against the Cubs. They defiantly needed this win over the Cubs one just not to lose the series and 2 they should have not lost the night before. This home stand is a very good opportunity for them to get some wins.
So that is it for this one and Roxivus.
Have one more from the Cubs series and they already played 2 against the Marlins as I am writing this. I was there for all 3. Also check back for the announcement of the contest from my last post’s contest. Also somewhere I may post photos of some of the Items I got at Roxivus and autos.
See You at Coors!!!!
7-18-2013 / 7-19-2013
Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
Yes, I am back home after the road trip!
This is 2 days in one entry because the first day Thursday the 18th was the 1st Day of Roxivus. Which was this years version of Rockies Fest which is usually held in January before the team heads to spring training. So the name Roxivus had us asking the question of what is Roxivus stand for and 4 days later we still really don’t know! So I looked up to see if Ivus means anything in other languages and well it did not. The only thing that I could find that had any resembled the IVUS was an acronym for digital imaging process Intravascular ultrasound. If you really need to know what it is here is the Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IVUS. Some even thought it was a play on word from the Seinfeld’s show’s Festivus. Another look at the word it may incorporate the Roman Numeral for 4 (IV), so it would mean Rox 4 us. So draw your own conclusion to the meaning of the word Roxivus to us regulars it was a fan fest!
So what they did was brought in a bunch of former players from the past 20 years of the Rockies history a bunch from the late 90’s and early 2000’s. The players were Brian Fuentes, Josh Fogg, Jason Jennings, Pedro Astacio, Kevin Ritz, Mike Lansing, Terry Shumbert, Ben Petrick and from the 1993 team Andres “The Big Cat” Gallaraga. Many that I know of since living here in Denver a few I did not know about till this weekend. So the first day was an autograph session, interview session and Rockies open batting practice. I first went onto Galarragas line and he was with Kevin Ritz I had Galarraga sign my 1993 opening day from Shea photo and ball for me. I had Kevin Ritz cards which I forgot at home. Any body I did not have stuff for I got them to sign a card that they had at the table with the 20th Anniversary logo on it. While waiting on the line for The Big Cat one of the Rockies staffers asked a trivia question about the Rockies, the question was Besides Jason Jennings there were 3 other Rockies to win 10 games before the all-star break name 2 of the 3 For answering this question I won a pint of the Rockies 20 Anniversary Ale and a T- Shirt if you answer it I will give you something from this Roxivus weekend. There is a catch if you were on-line with me you are not eligible or if I talk to you about this! Because well you heard the answer. To answer the question Email me: firstname.lastname@example.org (there is a underscore between the Xand A) to answer this will remain open till August 1, when a winner will be pick from the people who get the answer correct. The prize will include Autographs!!!! I will announce winner on August 2nd. I will also announce what the prize will be in a later blog entry from later this weekend.
After the autograph session they had a Q&A session with all the players. They all were introduced and said what they have been up to since leaving the Rockies and Baseball. Many just spend time with the family while others have gotten into different business and careers.
Here are some photos of then:
The Big Cat being introduced.
Jason Jennings talking while Josh Fogg and Shawn Chacon look on.
A look at all the players on top of the dugout.
While the interview session was going on and the Rockies ended batting practice Dante throw to his son Bo and to one of Walt Weiss’ kids.
Bo in the cage taking some swings. They both hit well and Bo put a few over the wall in left field.
After Dante stopped and signed for a bunch of us he signed my 1993 throwback jersey of his that the Rockies wore against the Mets back in April. Above he is signing for Smitty.
A card for Jared.
and a bobble head for EB. It was very cool of him to stop and sign for us.
So that was it for ROIVUS!
The next day Friday the Rockies started the second half of the season against the Chicago Cubs and they continued the Roxivus festivity’s which mad for a busy day.
When I first got to the stadium I headed out for batting practice for a little while and then headed over to get some autographs. I first got onto Andres Galarragas line again and got a few of my cards signed since the day before I got a ball and Card signed. Then went to the area under the Rockpile where Pedro Astacio, Terry Shumpert and Brian Fuentes were. I had a few cards for Fuentes and got the 20th Anniversary cards signed. I then headed over to the third table by the playground where Josh Fogg, Shawn Chacon, Jason Jennings and Ben Petrick. I had Petrick’s book signed for a friend and had cards for Jason Jennings.
Shawn Chacon signing for Mike.
Shawn Chacon handing a ball back to a fan with Josh Fogg, Jason Jennings and Ben Petrick signing in the background.
Ben Petrick handing a ball back to a fan after signing also.
Troy Tulowitzki stepping to the plate in the 2nd inning.
After going to Andres Galarraga table again I headed back out to right field and got those guys again. I went out there because I did not get a Ben Petrick autograph the first time through I did got the 20th Anniversary cards signed by each of the guys out there.
While I was waiting online Dexter Fowler hit a solo home run to lead off the 4th inning for the Rockies it was his 1st homer in about 6 weeks. The score at this point was 1-1 the Cubs got a run in the 4th inning also on a solo home run theirs hit by Alfonso Soriano.
I was on-line with Josh the Mohawk guy! He was a really cool guy I have seen him around this season but never had met him before. Most of the conversation was about his Mohawk and what goes into getting it to look that way. Josh Fogg seemed amazed also. Josh and his Mohawk are also featured in this months Rockies magazine on page 11 and 12.
I finally settled into a seat at the beginning of the 4th inning so in the pursuit of autographs I missed over half the game.
Tulo was on base and here he is getting tagged out at home after a ball got passed the Cubs catcher Wellington Castillo, he then throw to pitcher Jeff Samardzija. This play ended the inning for the Rockies.
Jorge De La Rosa was the starting pitcher for the Rockies.
Jeff Samardzija started for the Cubs
Nolan Arenado throws to first to get Jeff Samardzija out in the 7th inning.
Edgmer Escolona came into pitch for the Rockies in the 7th inning. Jorge pitched real well only giving up the 1 run to the Cubs in the 4th and 5 hits in his 6 innings he pitched. Not to sure what is up with the new stance by Edgmer.
Cody Ransom making the turn at third to score on a Anthony Rizzo double in the 7th inning. (2-1) Cubs
To third when Rizzo tried to stretch the double to a triple.
He was out to end the inning.
Jeff Samardzija was taking out by manager Dale Sveum and was replaced by Pedro Strob.
Cole Gilespie scores the Cubs 3rd run of the game in the 9th inning for a 3-1 lead.
D.J. LeMahieu Hit a lead off double for the Rockies in the bottom of the 9th.
Running to first after the hit.
Tulo tosses a ball up to the crowd after a Cargo foul tip.
Cargo hits the ball
He was out on a throw from Cubs short stop Starling Castro.
Michael Cuddyer would hit into a double play getting Tulo out at second and himself at first. Tulo got on base on a walk. So in the inning there was 3 all-Stars batting after D.J. hit a lead off double and they could not get him home. That about says what is happening this season. After very good pitching performances they can not get runs and after someone gets on base they can’t get the run in this inning the Rockies had a very good opportunity to at least tie the game and ended up loosing it with the 3-1 score.
That was it for this game against the Cubs and day 2 of Roxivus.
So I was at Coors for the full series and will be there all week as the Rox play the Marlins and Brewers.
See You at Coors!
